Exchange Mechanism Curated by Raimi Gbadamosi A new exhibition, which transforms Belfast Exposed into free public space, in which the only currency is knowledge, imagination and the exchange of ideas. 11 February to 9 April 2010 Exhibition preview: 11 February 2010, 7-9pm Exhibition run: 12 February � 9 April 2010 Gallery opening hours: Tuesday- Sunday, 11 am- 4 pm Concept: increasing regulation of public space, restrictions on mobility, routine invasions of personal privacy - these are the starting points for an interrogation of the demands and denials of freedom alongside artists� responsibility to actively engage with the political. Context: over eight weeks, Belfast Exposed will operate as an alternative political space, where visitors encounter set works, complicated by �disruptions�. The intention is to present visitors with the opportunity to engage with ideas; explain, interpret and respond to the work in as many ways as possible, in the context of political debate and multiple channels of exchange: artist, viewer, art; public, politics, ideas; visitor, city, gallery. Simultaneously functioning as a debating chamber, an installation of esoteric and popular media and an archive display, Exchange Mechanism seeks to challenge the abstraction of spontaneous public, political and artistic encounters from everyday life. Art installations: New work by Acitore Artizione, Joanna Karolini, and Gail Ritchie Archive display: This is a Fiction is a film made of photographs from the Belfast Exposed archive, addressing the separation of memory from real events and the archive, as a repository of facts, knowing inventions, isolated realities and composed narratives. Engagement: Amidst deepening economic crisis and an approaching general election, Belfast Exposed is building a public platform in its main gallery and calling on activists, academics, artists, individuals and groups to help organise a very public programme of: � Key debates and panel discussions around exhibition themes � Presentations, talks, speeches, campaigns and membership drives � Weekend salons, Pecha Kucha and conversations We want people to get involved as speakers, organisers, activists and volunteers.
