CUEs generous contributions toward this partnership have enabled us to exhibit the work of over one hundred and twenty MFA recipient artists to date. Our grant recipients represent a diverse cross-section of emerging artists from across the country, from Californias San Jose State University to the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, from the University of Mississippi to the School of Visual Arts in New York City. A complimentary catalogue, available at the CUE gallery, has been published on the occasion of this exhibition. The catalogue features works and bios for each artist and anessay by Gregory Amenoff, Curator Governor at CUE. The Joan Mitchell Foundations annual MFA Grant Program was created in 1997 with the intention of assisting MFA painters and sculptors in furthering their artistic careers and aiding them as they transition from academic to professional studio work upon graduation. Each received an MFA Grant in the amount of $15,000. To date the Joan Mitchell Foundation has awarded 133 MFA Grants. These grants are given in recognition of artistic quality to artists chosen from a body of candidates put forth by nominators from the academic art community across the United States. The Joan Mitchell Foundation was established in 1993 as a not-for-profit corporation following the death of Joan Mitchell in 1992. The Foundation strives to fulfill the ambitions of Joan Mitchell to assist the needs of contemporary artists and demonstrate that painting and sculpture are significant cultural necessities. |
