KAROLINA ZDUNEK Lost in Perspective 16 Sep. 2010 / 05 Nov. 2010 KAROLINA ZDUNEK ha elegido Lost in Perspective �perdido en la perspectiva- como t�tulo para su primera exposici�n individual en Espa�a, con la que la galer�a Espacio M�nimo inaugura la temporada 2010-2011, compuesta por una extensa selecci�n de sus �ltimos trabajos pict�ricos que, mediante el empleo de la perspectiva lineal, recrean un intrincado y artificial entramado de falsas perspectivas que justifican sobradamente el nombre de la muestra. La pintura es entendida por KAROLINA ZDUNEK como un medio que refiere a los sentidos. Poseedora de un car�cter f�sico y sensual, gracias al empleo de la antigua t�cnica pict�rica a la enc�ustica, cuyo empaste grueso incita al espectador a sentir la textura de sus obras, la pintura de ZDUNEK sobrepasa la barrera de la distancia y supera la aparente frialdad de las formas representadas. La apariencia visual hace que su trabajo sea f�sicamente atractivo, pero su principal inter�s reside en vencer las limitaciones impuestas por la bidimensionalidad del medio pict�rico, asunto que viene preocupando a los artistas desde la Antig�edad. Como un nuevo seguidor de Piero della Francesca o Giorgio de Chirico, KAROLINA ZDUNEK emplea la perspectiva lineal a modo de escritura, de caligraf�a, e, inspirada por Italo Calvino, crea representaciones art�sticas de ciudades imposibles que expresan el deseo eterno de conseguir el cielo sobre la tierra. A trav�s de pasillos que no conducen a ninguna parte, de elementos arquitect�nicos que evocan una visi�n de la ciudad como mecanismo perfecto autosuficiente, sus pinturas se convierten en una utop�a sin huella de presencia humana, pero creada para ser experimentada por los sentidos del hombre. Esta b�squeda por parte de KAROLINA ZDUNEK de la utop�a a trav�s de visiones urbanas imaginarias, ha evolucionado en sus �ltimos trabajos hacia su representaci�n en un espacio sobrenatural donde trampillas misteriosas, cruce de caminos o evocadores vistas inspiradas en primitivos juegos de ordenador, atraen al espectador hacia una realidad paralela. Un espacio infinito que desaf�a las manifiestas limitaciones bidimensionales del lienzo donde la total irrealidad de las representaciones no impiden que seamos seducidos por ellas. KAROLINA ZDUNEK (Kielce, Polonia, 1978), estudi� de 1998 a 2003 en la Academy of Fine Arts de Varsovia donde obtuvo la Beca al Mejor Graduado en 2003. En 2002 gana el Primer Premio de la Competici�n de Escultura �Freedom. Peace. Beauty� organizada por Eurocentrum en Polonia. En 2004 - 2005 gan� el Premio Especial para Artistas del Ministerio de Cultura en Varsovia. En 2005 obtuvo el Gran Premio de la Bienal de Pintura �Bielska Autumn�. Ha expuesto regularmente de forma individual y colectiva desde 2001 en galer�as polacas y de otras partes de Europa como Lokal_30 en sus sedes de Varsovia y Londres e instituciones como Zacheta National Gallery en Varsovia, y ha participado en distintas ferias internacionales de arte contempor�neo como Art Forum Berlin, Liste en Basilea, ZOO Art Fair en Londres, Vienna Fair en Viena, Nada Miami, Tokyo Contemporary Art Fair� KAROLINA ZDUNEK vive y trabaja en Varsovia. KAROLINA ZDUNEK Lost in Perspective September 16th, 2010 � November 5th, 2010 Opening: Thursday, September 16th, 2010, 8:00 p.m. KAROLINA ZDUNEK has chosen Lost in Perspective as the title for her first solo show in Spain. This exhibition, with which the gallery Espacio M�nimo opens their 2010-2011 season, is composed of an extensive selection of Karolina�s latest pictorial works that, employing lineal perspective, create a complex and artificial weave of false perspectives that amply justifies the exhibition�s title. The painting is understood by KAROLINA ZDUNEK as a means of referring to the senses; possessing a character that is both physical and sensual. Thanks to the use of the ancient medium of encaustic, whose thick impasto incites the viewer to feel the texture of the pieces, ZDUNEK�s paintings have the ability to exceed the barrier of distance and surpass the apparent frigidity of the represented forms. The visual appearance makes her work physically attractive, but her main interest lies in overcoming the limitations imposed by the two-dimensionality of painting, an issue that has been of concern to artists since ancient times. As a new follower of Piero della Francesca and Giorgio de Chirico, KAROLINA ZDUNEK utilizes linear perspective and, inspired by Italo Calvino, creates artistic representations of fantastic cities that express the eternal desire to achieve heaven on earth. Captured in hallways that lead nowhere and architectural elements that evoke a vision of the city as a self-sufficient mechanism, the paintings thus become a utopia without a trace of human presence, only created to be experienced by the senses of man. This search by KAROLINA ZDUNEK for utopia through imaginary urban visions has evolved in her later works through her representation of a supernatural space where mysterious trapdoors, crossroads or evocative views inspired by early computer games draw the viewer into a parallel reality. An infinite space that defies the obvious limitations of bi-dimensionality, on which the complete farce of representations does not prevent us of being seduced by them. KAROLINA ZDUNEK (Kielce, Polonia, 1978), studied from 1998 to 2003 at the Academy of Fine Arts of Warsaw where she obtained the Best Graduate Scholarship in 2003. In 2002 she won first prize in the sculpture competition �Freedom. Peace. Beauty� organized by Eurocentrum in Poland. In 2004/2005 she was awarded a special prize as an artist of the Ministry of Culture in Warsaw. In 2005 she obtained the grand prize in the Biennial of Painting �Bielska Autumn�. She has regularly exhibited individually and collectively since 2001 in Polish galleries and in other parts of Europe like Lokal_30 in its headquarters in Warsaw and London as well as institutions like Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw. She has also participated in various international contemporary art fairs like Art Forum Berlin, Liste in Basel, ZOO Art Fair in London, Vienna Fair en Vienna, Nada Miami and Tokyo Contemporary Art Fair.
