The Sexual Life of Savages is an exhibition of intricate drawings and sculptures which examine race, gender, and sexuality, as embodied in the dystopic/utopic construction of savagery and primitivism. The exhibition takes its title and starting point from Bronislaw Malinowskis classic anthropological text. In the middle of the room, a person-sized blanket is filled with purported Objects of Magical Import. These low-fi objects reference science experiments, babies toys, ritual charms and divination tools. They play upon the way in which mysterious, foreign things become imbued with magical power that is triggered by fear, misunderstanding and desire. They address the exoticism and projection bound up in the idea of magic and the violence inherent in the idea of import. Nine graphite-and-watercolor-drawings present seductive landscapes inhabited by a host of uncanny characters: starving settlers drag themselves to a plump black child, while a circle of hermaphrodite dancers whirl about in a blood-letting ritual, and shriveled monk-gnomes ride upon the shoulders of indigenous girls. The drawings and objects give forms to the ways in which desire and anxiety create narratives of savagery, spirituality, and sexuality. Candice Lin received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and her B. A. from Brown University. Lins work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, the New York Underground Film Festival, Lisa Dent Gallery (SF), Milliken Gallery (Stockholm,), Valenzuela Y Klenner Arte Contemporaneo (Bogota), and Kino Lab at the Ujazdowski Castle (Warsaw). In 2004, Lin was awarded an artist residency at CESTA (Czech Republic) and is currently a 2009 Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow. Also opening that same night from 6 to 8pm, is a group exhibition?Glue, Paper, Scissors, at the Luckman Gallery (Cal-State LA) 5151 State University Drive, LA, CA 90032, including works by Candice Lin, Dan Bayles, and Maeghan Reid.
