Wolfgang Tillmans October 20 - December 3, 2011 The Galerie Chantal Crousel is pleased to announce Wolfgang Tillmans’ second solo show at the gallery. For this exhibition Wolfgang Tillmans presents new photographs taken during the past couple of years - pictures of his familiar environment intermixed with images taken around the world. Each exhibition is an opportunity for the artist to explore his repertoire of pictures and to read each image in the light of the others, giving us each time a renewed vision of our world and its complexity: “ Such networks of images and of meanings suggest the multivalent complexity of a life...In these situations Tillmans has found, not just a new and challenging way to work with photographs in the spaces of galleries and museums, but to underscore the depth of his engagment with contingency. By contingency I mean the way in which meaning, but also subjectivity, sexuality, gender and identity, are all unstable and temporary results of dynamic processes at the heart of which is difference ” (David Deitcher “Lost and Found” in Wolfgang Tillmans, Taschen, 1998). Large unframed inkjet prints and C-prints of various formats are taped or clipped directly to the gallery walls with no pre-defined hierarchy. If the works of this exhibition are mostly camera-based, abstract photographs appears in the constellation of images, notably with the Silver series. These camera-less works are the result of the paper reacting to light and chemical as well as mechanical processes. Made by feeding paper through a water-filled dirty processing machine they are either pure colour with infinite depth or mechanical pictures showing faint colours and traces of repetitive marks. In his work Tillmans also embraces technological advancements, using digital imaging to capture natural phenomena, such as a waterfall ( Iguazu , 2010) with its infinite frozen detail or making technology the subject matter of his photographs ( TGV, 2010, Movin Cool , 2010). Tillmans has always been fascinated with another instrument allowing image capture: the photocopier. He explores its abilities to multiply, magnify and transform images. The copy machine becomes is the source of numerous photographs and a video. Kopierer, 2010 is a static shot of an opened colour laser copier, performing copy fonctions during 10 minutes. The emerging light from the copier illuminates the space and is reflected in the open top as if it were a theatre curtain or a movie screen. Born in Remscheid, Germany, Wolfgang Tillmans was the first photographer to have won the Turner Prize in 2000. He has had numerous solo exhibitions worldwide including the Serpentine Gallery, London; the Museum of Contemporary, Chicago; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington; PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; the Tate Britain, London. He lives and works in Berlin and London. -- La Galerie Chantal Crousel est heureuse de vous présenter la seconde exposition personnelle de Wolfgang Tillmans à la galerie. Pour cette exposition, Wolfgang Tillmans a puisé dans son répertoire d’images qu’il constitue depuis plus de 20 ans. Chaque exposition est pour lui une occasion d’explorer ce répertoire et de relire chaque image à la lumière des autres, nous offrant une vision chaque fois renouvelée de notre monde et de sa complexité. Ici, le choix s’est porté sur des images datant de ces trois dernières années (2009-2011) : impressions jet d’encre de grand format (env. 200 x130 cm) non encadrées, C-prints de format moyen, et d’autres plus petits sont collés ou cloués directement aux murs de la galerie sans hiérarchie pré-définie. Une constellation d’images nous est donnée à voir - au spectateur de choisir sa lecture. Tillmans saisit dans ses photographies la fragilité humaine et la beauté des objets du quotidien, il revisite ainsi les genres classiques de l’histoire de l’art : le portrait ( Oberhaut, 2009; Mark, studio ; 2009), la nature morte ( Ushuaia Lupine (a)) ou le paysage qui peut être naturel (Iguazu , 2010) ou urbain ( Rest of the world, 2009 ; Cladding , 2009). Il explore aussi les possibilités de l’abstraction en photographie (série Silver et Lighter ) délaissant l’appareil : les oeuvres de la série Silver portent les traces de poussières et d’argent des produits chimiques. Pour les Ligther le papier photosensible est travaillé dans différents bains, et ensuite souvent plié. Depuis toujours, l’artiste est fasciné par un autre instrument permettant la capture d’une image : la photocopieuse . Il en explore toutes les possibilités : la multiplication des images, leur agrandissement, leur transformation. La machine elle-même devient le sujet de nombreuses photographies et d’une vidéo. Kopierer, 2010 – video HD, 10 minutes - est un plan fixe sur une photocopieuse laser couleur ouverte, en train de copier des documents pendants 10 minutes. La lumière surgissant de la photocopieuse illumine la chambre noire de l’atelier de l’artiste et se reflète dans le capot ouvert comme si celui ci était un rideau de théâtre ou un écran de cinéma. La Douane Thomas Hirschhorn Equality Float Sept. 22, 2011 - Nov. 25, 2011 La Douane / Galerie Chantal Crousel is pleased to announce the exhibition of Thomas Hirschhorn, “Equality Float”. The eponymous work represents a carnival float measuring 21 metres long by 6 meters wide. Produced for and presented at MACRO, Vigo in 2008, the work is exhibited here for the first time in France. “Equality Float” is an allegory of the community, highlighting both its ills and their remedies; a reflection on the notions of equality / inequality. It is a theme that the artist explores through the interaction of opposites, of political and philosophical essays (Spinoza, Deleuze, Bataille, Gramsci). The work is paired with a text of the German philosopher Marcus Steinweg, with whom Thomas Hirschhorn has worked during the past ten years, specially commissioned to be included in the work. During the exhibition, a comprehensive librabry composed of the bibliography of the work, preparatory drawings and other methodological notes is available for consultation to the visitors.
