“Fénautrigues is a hamlet of the village of Bannes above Saint-Céré in the department of Lot. Near the hamlet in the same village is the place-name Le Moulin, the birthplace of the Moulène family name. While we lived in Spain and Morocco with my parents and brothers (until about 1965 - I was born in 1955), we used to return to this ancestral land for summer vacation. Our great-grandfather had left us a little house there. The teenager would later refuse to return to that place. Then in 1976 I wrote there my MA essay in Visual Arts and Art Sciences. A studious contact was made again and ever since I never stopped coming back. From 1991 to 2006, during 18 stays, I ranged over some 5 km2 of our playground, cameras in hand. Almost a survey, or an audit, these documents are marked with aesthetic questions that accompanied me during those 15 years. However, I confined myself to the views field labour and nature. There is therefore no faces or buildings. Nodes of observations have emerged: Mr. Chaudun’ garden and its descendancy in Jacqueline Sol ‘s two successive gardens, the two large limetrees in the south and in the north, Juliette Moulène’s kitchen garden, that of Roland the killer, the terror of the high path, the hollow path down, the aisles of white beeches along the Bannes and Molière old country roads, and so on. Without ever practicing scientific observation (view points and constant hours), I tried instead to give each image the singularity of a familiar encounter. ”

Jean-Luc Moulène.

Jean-Luc Moulène’s fourth exhibition at Galerie Chantal Crousel offers a selection of photographs from the eponymous edition.
A public commission of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, “Fénautrigues”, published in 2010, shows 500 pictures out of 7000 shots taken, which constitute an aesthetic and analytical inventory of a landscape in which, from 1991 to 2006, Jean-luc Moulène photographed the places of his childhood in the department of Lot. “Fénautrigues” invites the visitor to contemplate landscape and time, in a manner that is not dictated by the seduction of the image, but rather in a way that entails the autonomy of the latter. Here, photography reflects a necessary and self-revealing autonomy of the glance, which is built in the heart of an active and critical aesthetic.
