Três metades Armando Andrade Tudela Opening 30.08.2014, 14h - 17h Exhibition 30.08.2014 | 04.18.2014 We are pleased to present Três metades [Three Halves], the second exhibition by Peruvian artist Armando Andrade Tudela at Galeria Fortes Vilaça. The show features three series of works that explore notions concerning architecture and nomadism. In Rama, tree branches found in the streets are cast in bronze and have a plastic bag hanging at their end. The content of the bags reveals objects of everyday use – books, cell phones and T-shirts – mixed with materials from the artist’s studio such as plaster and copper plates. The sculptures suggest small snapshots of contemporary subjectivity, they are personified like Giacometti’s elongated figures, while denoting vestiges of something that is fleeting or in movement. Tudela’s research is often focused on how cultural aspects from different origins and times clash in hybrid objects. In Metades XXL, large pieces of printed fabric (canvas and satin, with zippers) are cutout and sewn in deconstructed forms of a kimono, poncho, Parangolé and flag or banner. The printed patterns are based on distorted images of digital typography as well as drawings in which the artist drags pieces of plaster over the paper in a process of transference. The images are alternated on the inside and outside, and between the two sides of the fabric hanging in space. The work gains the outlines of a precarious architecture, a shelter. we transfer (SP) is a group of works in plaster entitled with the name of the online service for transferring digital files. They are abstract plaster sculptures that are also presented as artifacts of a contemporary archaeology that includes travel brochures, credit cards and the like. Armando Andrade Tudela was born in 1975 in Lima, Peru, and currently lives in Lyon, France. The artist has participated in various important exhibitions, most notably: Bienal de Cuenca, Equador (2014); Under the Same Sun: Art from Latin America Today, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA (2014); Panorama da Arte Brasileira, MAM, São Paulo (2009); Lyon Biennale, France (2007); Bienal de São Paulo (2006); Shanghai Biennale, China (2006); Turin Triennial, Italy (2005).
