Materialista Damin Ortega

[scroll down for English]

[English]
Materialista [Materialist] is the title of the never-before-shown installation created by Mexican artist Damin Ortega especially for the Galpo Fortes Vilaa. This eight-meter-long artwork resorts to fundamental characteristics of Ortegas work: the appropriation of objects of daily life, deconstruction, and playful treatment of language.

Materialista is the word used in Mexico to designate a truck that transports construction materials. When one enters the Galpo, this is precisely what one sees: a truck hanging from steel cables from the gallerys ceiling. However, what our mind immediately identifies as a truck is actually only the vehicles chromed parts and the voids between them. The radiator, the bumpers, the mud flaps, the mirrors all of the chromed parts are hung there as if there were in fact a motor, a drivers cabin and seat. But there is only empty space between them. Our understanding of the pieces present takes place through the context in which they are included, since only a lone piece would be unidentifiable and its function imperceptible. The structure that is formed thus resembles a constellation.

The play on words between the artworks title and the object it is based on is an important element of the work. The materialist truck is identified with the distribution of concrete goods, used for construction, and is therefore inserted in a known or predictable logic of the weights and values of the objects brought from one place to another in plain sight of everyone. In opposition, the hollow structure of the artwork emphasizes its symbolic charge. This materialism is related not only with the power of matter and antimatter, but also with the logic of values in the art market, where the value attributed to the objects is not always visible.

The first time that Damin Ortega dismembered an automobile was in 2002. Unlike Materialista, his artwork Cosmic Thing presented a Volkswagen beetle the icon of the promise of modernity as in an exploded view technical diagram, with all its pieces held in space by steel wires attached to the ceiling. Cosmic Thing was shown at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), Philadelphia, USA, and subsequently at the 50th Venice Biennale, in 2003.

Damin Ortega is one of the most internationally well-known artists of his generation. In 20082009 he held a large solo at Centre Pompidou, in Paris, where he showed his installation Champ de Vision. In 2006 he participated in the 27th Bienal de So Paulo; in 2007 he was nominated for the Preis Der Nationalgalerie fur Junge Kunst, in Germany; and in 2005 he was nominated for the Hugo Boss Prize

Thaddeus Strode
Phantasmagoria

Em 2007, o artista teve uma retrospectiva no Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis, intitulada Thaddeus Strode: Absolutes and Nothings.

Galeria Fortes Vilaa is pleased to present North American artist Thaddeus Strodes first exhibition in Brazil. Titled Phantasmagoria, the show features seven vibrant large-format paintings presenting realities tending toward the absurd, with enigmatic characters set off against active, intensively colored backgrounds.

Strodes references are drawn from pop culture, ranging from street paintings to skate and California surf culture, rock music, movies and comic books to culminate in an aesthetics reminiscent of North American 1980s neo-expressionism. The power and visual pleasure of his artworks spring from the strange combinations established within the same canvas, where figurative elements are side-by-side with abstract colored splotches, overlain with truncated phrases and loose words. The result is a gestural painting with touches of humor and protest.

Strodes universe is inhabited by curious goats, bizarre monkeys, monsters, men with medieval masks, and a myriad of vigorously delineated characters. They seem to have been taken from an animated movie whose story is set in a New York ghetto, or from a limbo between civilization and primitivism.

In the painting Incantation 2: And the building of a New Reality, a gorilla appears mixed with loose words written in Spanish a reference to the strong Latino presence in the US against background of colorful and expressive yellow, orange and blue. Capping off and balancing the composition, Strode painted various white squares, allowing the paint to run down in streaks over the colored background.

Phantasmagoria is defined as a series of happenings involving drastic changes in the intensity of lighting and colors, but can also be interpreted as an abstract state in which the imaginary and the real are blended; it is the perfect title to summarize the production Strode presents at Fortes Vilaa.

Thaddeus Strode was born in Santa Monica, USA, in 1964. He currently lives in Los Angeles. He is widely known internationally, having exhibited in important galleries and participated in exhibitions at institutions such as Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Muse dArt Contemporain, Montreal; and Brandts Kunsthalle, Odense, Denmark. In 2007, the artist had a retrospective show at Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis, titled Thaddeus Strode: Absolutes and Nothings.
