Erika Verzutti - Bicho de Sete Cabeas [Seven Headed Monster] Galeria Fortes Vilaa

Galeria Fortes Vilaa is pleased to present Bicho de 7 Cabeas [7-Headed Beast]. The exhibition, in the Garden of the Galpo Fortes Vilaa, consists of a monumental sculpture by Erika Verzutti in collaboration with artists Adriana Varejo, Alexandre da Cunha, Carlos Bevilacqua & Ernesto Neto, Damin Ortega, Efrain Almeida, Jac Leirner and Nuno Ramos.
Bicho de 7 cabeas is in keeping with a modus operandi exercised by the artist, where a sculptural mass becomes a recipient for all the forms. Saramandaia, a bronze sculpture from 2006, is a vase that holds a bust, a hammer, a ducks head, etc. In 2007, the artist made her first Bicho de 7 cabeas, with a deformed arm from which sprout bronze heads molded from pumpkins, star fruits, bananas,... The sculpture presented here unfolds this experimentalism in various layers.

For Bicho de 7 Cabeas, 2010, Verzutti invited artists with totally distinct practices to each elaborate one of the heads, with the only condition that they be resistant to the weather. Some of the heads naturally echo the respective artists individual practices. Others present surprising results. Alexandre da Cunha put a concrete mixer in the place of his head, while Adriana Varejo made a cube covered with tiles with eyes embedded in the surface. Efrain Almeida sculpted a swans head, and Jac Leirner appropriated a head from a garden sculpture. The proposed heads are also related with the sculptures collective, allegorical and conceptual character. Ernesto Neto and Carlos Bevilacqua, invited to conceive a single head together, proposed a white feather. Damin Ortega enlarged the collective nature of the monster, by proposing a malleable head, which the viewers themselves can manipulate. Last but not least, Nuno Ramos, suggested a talking head, which recites a text of his authorship.

Erika Verzutti has presented her work at Blow de La Barra Gallery London, UK(2007); Swallow Street Gallery, London UK(2009); and Misako & Rosen Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (2009 and 2010).

Mauro Restiffe - Recorrncias Galeria Fortes Vilaa
19.09.2010 | 30.10.2010

Galeria Fortes Vilaa is pleased to present Recorrncias [Recurrences], by Mauro Restiffe, featuring seven black-and-white photographs being shown for the first time. The selection of the works reveals a subjective unity, in addition to their shared themes, places or dates.

An elegantly dressed man looks at the camera in the center of the composition, while tourists hurry past him (Old Man in Venice, 2010). The "dialog" between the gaze of the photographer and the man in the photograph creates a sort of reflection, like a mirror. The same thing occurs in Mirante #3 [Scenic Outlook #3], in which a group of adults and children are together at the top of a mountain. They are preparing to group themselves together in front of a girl, who is on top of a rock trying to get them all in the picture. Just like the man in Venice, the young girl, this time with her back to Restiffes camera, occupies the center of the composition and seems to be the personification of the photographer within his own image.

Reflections and mirrorings also appear in images of architecture. In Baragan, a dense branch of foliage in a garden is mirrored in the pool of the famous house of the Mexican architect. In Pampulha, the landscape with the lake at Pampulha is reflected in the windows of the museum. In Stage, Tlatetolco #14 and Arena, a theatrical meaning is established in the framing and in the artists intention, where the subject of the images appears to be the architecture of the stage.

In December, Mauro Restiffe is inaugurating a large exhibition at the new MAC [Museu de Arte Contempornea], in So Paulo. His work is part of the collection of TATE Modern, London, SFMOMA, San Francisco among others.

Luiz Zerrbini Galeria Fortes Vilaa
19.09.2010 | 23.10.2010

Galeria Fortes Vilaa is pleased to present new artworks by Luiz Zerbini, in an exhibition that features figurative and abstract paintings, collages and video. In this recent production, Zerbini radicalizes the discourse on landscape, resorting to saturation in the field of painting and exploring its unfolding in new media.

Geometric abstraction appears as a structural element in his figurative paintings, in his purely abstract paintings, and also as a subject of a series of works made with slide frames and colored gelatin.

A myriad of elements from nature are interwoven on a distant horizon in the canvas High Definition, where colored horizontal lines are overlaid to the image, as though they were defects generated on a computer screen. In Lago quadrado [Square Lake], a tree is seen in the foreground, against an iridescent multicolored background. Mar do Japo [Sea of Japan] is another large-format painting where the artist establishes layers: species of flora teeming against a horizontal geometric grid, against a seascape. Structured in the overlaying of images and the saturation of colors, these artworks create a kind of gravitational field for all the other works in the exhibition.

The video Serto [Arid Backlands] proposes a moment of deceleration and contemplation, where electronic errors squares with colors similar to those in High Definition reappear on the surface of a lake that reflects the clouds in the sky.

Zerbini is also presenting abstract collages, subtracting the images from old slides to create a new geometric composition loaded with memory. The artist glues the frames side-by-side and sometimes fills them with colored gelatin, using the vibrations of the colors and the luminosity of the material.

Luiz Zerbini is participating in the 29th Bienal de So Paulo, with the installation Inferninho [Little Hell]. In 2010, the artist also released the book Luiz Zerbini, of the collection ARTE BRA, by Aeroplano publishers.
