Curtain Callers ANN-SOFI SIDÉN in collaboration with Jonathan Bepler 10.03. – 14.04.2012 Eröffnung: Freitag, 09. März, 19 - 21 Uhr Opening: Friday, 09 March, 7 - 9 pm press release (please scroll down for English version) Galerie Barbara Thumm freut sich die vierte Einzelausstellung von Ann-Sofi Sidén, in einer Kooperation mit dem amerikanischen Komponisten Jonathan Bepler, präsentieren zu können. Curtain Callers wurde im Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm aufgenommen. Dieser grossformatigen Produktion resultierten mehrere Arbeiten in unterschiedlichen Formaten. Zum einen der Film Curtain Callers und zum anderen Curtain Callers (Entracte), eine 5-kanalige Video-Installation, sowie ein episches Fotopanorama und mehrere Diptychen, welche in den Räumen der Galerie Barbara Thumm präsentiert wird. Curtain Callers untersucht die Institution des zeitgenössischen Theaters. Sidén bedient sich dabei einer Fülle von aufgenommenem Video- und Soundmaterial und umschreibt damit die Kernpunkte fiktionaler Konstruktion und deren stetig wandelnder Prozesse, flüchtige Momente von Kreation wie sie in den einstudierten Ritualen zwischen Bühne und Publikum entstehen. An der Produktion hat ein 600 Personen starker Chor mitgewirkt, die Akteure und gleichzeitig Theaterpublikum darstellten und den lebendigsten und zentralsten Anteil an der Komposition, dem Film und der Installation, ausmachen. Curtain Callers bietet eine Komplexität, die in seiner Thematik und formalen Sprache vieles aus früheren Arbeiten von Sidén aufgreift. Die Auslotung und Erfindung fiktionaler Charaktere finden sich schon in Filmen wie Queen of Mud (QM), der Fiktion des alter egos Sidéns. Ihre ausgiebige und detailierten Studien räumlicher Widersprüchliche zeigten autarke Welten, deren Bewohner von eigentümlichen Hierarchien bestimmt wurden. In 3 MPH (From Horse To Rocket), nimmt Sidén die Indentität eines alten Abenteurers und Entdeckers ein, der durch Texas reitet. Dabei portraitiert sie kulturelle und geographische Aspekte der USA und kommentiert deren zeitgenössisch beschleunigten Lebensaspekte. Sidén entwickelte in der Postproduktion von 3 MPH eine filmische Erzählform des Multi-Channel-Panoramas, die in ihrer ganz eigenen Art das bewegte Bild und das Filmstill miteinander verwebt. Curtain Callers verfeinert diese Erzählstruktur noch mehr, blättert das Innere des Theaters, das Gebilde in dem Fiktion ensteht auf, schneidet es in visuelle Scheiben die zwischen Publikum und Backstage wandern. Die Bilder verbinden sich mit Jonathan Beplers 360-Grad-Surround-Komposition. Es entsteht eine feine Balance zwischen Komposition, zufälligem Sound und ständig neu sich kombinierenden Szenen der vielschichtigen Erzählungen, die sich in der täglichen Routine des Nationaltheaters entwickeln, dem Theater in dem Ingmar Bergman seine Karriere began und beendete. Curtain Callers wurde von Mobile Art Productions (MAP) produziert und wurde zuletzt im Januar 2012 in Göteborg im Rahmen des Internationalen Filmfestivals Göteburg gezeigt. Im März erscheint das Buch Curtain Callers im neu gegründeten Verlag Art & Theory Publishing mit Unterstützung der Galerie Barbara Thumm. Das Buch gestaltete Stefania Malmsten und beinhaltet Texte von Jörg Heiser, Ann-Sofi Sidén, sowie einem Interview mit den Künstlern von Magdalena Malm. Sidén erhielt für ihre komplexen und intensiven Videoinstallationen internationale Anerkennung. Sie wurde unter anderem auf der Venedig Biennale, der São Paolo Biennale und der Carnegie International (Pittburgh), sowie in den Institutionen Musee d’Art Modern de LaVille de Paris, The Hayward Gallery (London) und dem Moderna Museet (Stockholm) gezeigt. 2012 erhielt Ann-Sofi Sidén den Dagens Nyheters Culture prize 2011 in der Kategorie der Künste. Sidéns Arbeit befindet sich in hochkarätigen internationalen Sammlungen, wie dem KIASMA, (Helsinki), dem Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall, der MOCA North Miami, dem Moderna Museet (Stockholm), der Sammlung Goetz (München) und dem Winterthur Museum (Schweiz). Ann-Sofi Sidén war in den Jahren 2001/2002 im Rahmen des DAAD Programmes in Berlin. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Stockholm. Jonathan Bepler komponiert Musik für Film, Tanz und seine eigenen Audio-Installationen. Besonders bekannt machten ihn die Kompositionen zu Mathew Barneys Creamaster Filmen. Mit Ann-Sofi Sidén arbeitete er schon 1997 für den 35mm Film QM, I Think I Call Her QM zusammen. Im Rahmen der Ausstellung Curtain Callers findet am Samstag, den 17. März 2012, eine Buchpräsentation mit Video-Screening und Künstlergespräch mit Ann-Sofi Sidén, Jonathan Bepler, Jörg Heiser (Chefredakteur des Frieze Magazine) und Anna Eriksson (Herausgeberin des Buches Curtain Callers) als member event im Soho House Berlin statt. März 2012, an: [email protected]. __ The Barbara Thumm Gallery is pleased to present the fourth exhibition by Swedish artist Ann-Sofi Sidén, this time in collaboration with American composer Jonathan Bepler. Curtain Callers was recorded at The Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. This large-scale production is now presented in two parts: a film, Curtain Callers, and a 5-channel video installation, Curtain Callers (Entracte), to be shown together with a photo panorama and diptychs in Galerie Barbra Thumm. Curtain Callers examines the contemporary institutional theatre from within. The material is drawn from a wealth of recorded images and sounds, and reaches into the very core of fiction building and its ongoing processes, tracing the fleeting moment of release in the rehearsed ritual between the audience and the stage. The production included the staging of 600 choir singers serving as the theatre audience whose voices constitute a vital part of the musical score for both the film and the installation. Curtain Callers offers a complexity, thematically, formally and spatially that can also be found in some of Sidén’s earlier works. The exploration and invention of characters and fictional identities can be found in the films about the Queen of Mud(QM), her own alter ego. Her extended and detailed exploration of spatial dichotomies also comes to mind, with their self-contained worlds and the inherent hierarchies molding the people who inhabit them. In 3 MPH (From Horse To Rocket), Sidén took upon the identity of an old-time explorer riding through Texas, portraying a social, cultural and geographic part of the US while commenting on today’s ever faster-running world. This particularly unique way of weaving video and still images in the multi-channel panorama was invented by Sidén during the post-production stage of 3 MPH, and is now further refined for this last work, Curtain Callers, unfolding the inside of a theatre, a house of fiction building, slicing between the audience and the backstage. The visual image is coupled with Jonathan Bepler’s 360-degree surround sound musical score, striking a delicate balance between incidental sound and music, lingering and re-occurring around you while new scenes unfold in the many stories that make up the national stage’s daily routines where Ingemar Bergman began and ended his career. Curtain Callers is produced by Mobile Art Productions (MAP), and was last shown in January 2012 in Gothenburg, Sweden in conjunction with the Göteborg International Film Festival. In March 2012, the book Curtain Callers will be published by the newly established publishing house Art & Theory Publishing. The book is designed by Stefania Malmsten and includes texts by Jörg Heiser, Ann-Sofi Sidén and an interview with the artists by Magdalena Malm. Sidén has gained international recognition for her highly charged, complex video installations. She has shown her work at The Venice Bienale, São Paolo Bienale, Carnegie International (Pittburgh), Musee d’Art Modern de LaVille de Paris, The Hayward Gallery (London) and the Moderna Museet (Stockholm). In 2012 Ann-Sofi Sidén was awarded with the Dagens Nyheters Culture prize 2011 in the category of fine arts. Her work is present in renowned international public and private collections such as the KIASMA (Helsinki), the Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall, MOCA North Miami, the Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Sammlung Goetz (Munich) or the Winterthur Museum (Switzerland). Ann-Sofi Sidén came to Berlin as an artist-in-residence of the DAAD program in 2001/2002. She lives and works in Stockholm. Jonathan Bepler has composed music for film, dance and his own audio installations. He is best known for his compositions for Mathew Barneys Cremaster films. Sidén and Bepler collaborated as early as 1997 in the 35-mm film QM, I Think I Call Her QM.
