28 January 2011 - 26 February 2011 The Art of the 20th Century. Films presented by Olivier Mosset Vernissage am Donnerstag, 27. Januar, 6-8 pm. Filmabend im Uto Kino am Freitag, 28. Januar 2011, 22.30 Uhr (scroll down for english version) Ich habe den Film einmal als die Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts bezeichnet ("l'Art c'est l'Art", Musee d'ethnographie, Neuchatel, 1999, S. 180). Dabei dachte ich an die Filmindustrie und Regisseure wie Lang, Renoir, Hitchcock, Wells, Fellini, Godard, Fassbinder, die es erm�glicht haben, den Film als Kunst zu etablieren. Die Daugerreotypie konnte im 19. Jahrhundert nicht die Malerei verdr�ngen aber sie hatte ihre Spuren hinterlassen. Es war kein Zufall, dass die erste Ausstellung der Impressionisten im Atelier des Fotografen Nadar stattfand. Und Duchamps ber�hmtes Gem�lde Nude descending a staircase darf als Antwort auf Muybridges Woman walking down the stairs verstanden werden. Es gibt Filme wie Passion, La Belle Noiseuse, Une Visite au Louvre, die sich mit der Malerei besch�ftigen. Es gibt Schriftsteller wie Isou, Debord, Genet, Beckett, die Filme gemacht haben und es gibt Filmemacher wie Jack Smith, Kenneth Anger oder Tony Conrad, die die Kunstwelt f�r sich in Anspruch genommen hat. Indem der Film ein Teil unserer Gesellschaft wurde, begannen sich auch die K�nstlerInnen mit ihm auseinanderzusetzen. Meisterwerke des Film Noir, Western, Road Movies, ja sogar Vampier- und Alienfilme und Mickey Mouse sind zu wichtigen Referenzen f�r die zeitgen�ssische Kunst geworden. Wenn die Malerei bis heute als K�nigsdisziplin der Hochkultur betrachtet wird, so muss man bedenken, dass Maler wie Leger, H. Richter, Breer oder Warhol alle auch Filme realisiert haben. Sp�testens seit den Arbeiten von Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman oder Michel Auder werden Filme und Videos in Galerien und Museen gezeigt und k�nnen sich als eigenst�ndige Kunstform behaupten. Sie sind heute Teil dieser Kunstwelt. �ber den Film gibt es unz�hlige B�cher und sicherlich auch ein paar �ber das Verh�ltnis von Film und Malerei. Ich kann ihnen nichts Neues hinzuf�gen, sondern m�chte eher mit Serge Bard sprechen. Er sagte �ber seinen Film Here and Now: �Cinema is always somewhere else and before". Damit m�ssen wir leben. Hier und jetzt. Die Ausstellung in der Galerie Francesca Pia war eine naheliegende Idee. Ich habe in meiner Arbeit immer die N�he zum Film gesucht; in den 60er mit den Zanzibar productions, in den 80ern mit der New Yorker Underground Szene (Amos Poe, Eric Mitchell) und heute in der Zusammenarbeit mit Amy Granat und Drew Heitzler. Dies ist eine Ausstellung mit Schweiz Bezug. Ben Vautier lebt in Nizza und ist hat Schweizer Wurzeln, Daniel Spoerri ist Schweiz-Rum�ne und lebt in Italien und Sylvie Fleury lebt in Genf - eine Stadt, die manchmal nicht zur Schweiz geh�ren zu wollen scheint. Und sie alle sind internationale K�nstlerInnen. Was wir hier tun ist "think global, act local". Thank you Francesca! Olivier Mosset -- I have said once, that movies were the art of the 20th century ("l'Art c'est l'Art", Musee d'ethnographie, Neuchatel, 1999, p.180). I guess, I was thinking about the industry and these directors, Lang, Renoir, Hitchcock, Wells, Fellini, Godard, Fassbinder who made it happen. Those interested in visual art could not ignore that industry. Daguerrotype photography has not ended painting, but it had an effect and it is symptomatic that the impressionists showed at Nadar. Moving images too had an impact, on the art and the art scene. That famous "Nude descending a staircase" could have been a response to Muybridge's "Women walking down stairs". You have these directors interested in painting, "Passion", "La Belle Noiseuse", "Une Visite au Louvre", writers who made films, Isou, Debord, Genet, Beckett and these filmmakers who have been adopted by the art world such as Jack Smith, Kenneth Anger, Tony Conrad. Everybody knows what movies are and artists had to deal with this situation. You cannot ignore the 7th art, masterpieces or film noir, Westerns, road movies, even vampires, aliens and Mickey Mouse. Artists have not. Even if painting has a unique status as high art, painters like Leger, H. Richter, Breer or Warhol made movies. Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman or Michel Auder made videos and video art became a legitimate art form. Today, films and videos are shown in galleries and in museums. They are part of that world; they are art. There are millions of books written on cinema, and maybe some on the relationship between painting and cinema. These couple of words on this subject I don't really know well, are not going to tell you anything you don't know. As Serge Bard has said, talking about his movie "Here and Now": "Cinema is always somewhere else and before." The thing is, we have to deal with that, here and now. The exhibition at Galerie Francesca Pia We talked about this because I have been close to this movie thing all my life; in the sixties with the Zanzibar productions, with the New York underground scene of the eighties (Amos Poe, Eric Mitchell) and today with Amy Granat and Drew Heitzler. Of course this show is a swiss affair. Ben is a Swiss Occitant living in Nice, Daniel a Rumanian Swiss who lives in Italy and Sylvie lives in Geneva, a city which often seems not to want to be Swiss.
