FABRICE GYGI May 8 - July 16, 2010 Opening on Friday May 7, 2010, 6-8 pm (scroll down for english version) Fabrice Gygi, der letztes Jahr die Schweiz an der Venedig Biennale vertrat, untersucht mit einer minimalistischen Formensprache die Beziehungen zwischen scheinbar gegens�tzlichen Kr�ften. Auf spielerische und subversive Weise bedient er sich dem Zeichenvokabular gesellschaftlicher oder autorit�rer Systeme, transformiert und rekontextualisiert es und erzeugt so eine spannungsvolle, fast k�rperliche Atmosph�re. In seiner ersten Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Francesca Pia wird Fabrice Gygi neue Schmuckobjekte, Grafiken und Installationen zeigen. Die Comic-�hnliche Formen der Grafiken scheinen sich zu verfl�ssigen und sich �ber das Blatt zu bewegen. Jene Grafiken, welche L�cher aufweisen, spiegeln Gygis Affinit�t f�r die T�towierkunst; in seiner Jugend benutzte er seinen K�rper als Medium, indem er seinen Skizzenb�chern Zeichnungen entnahm um sie anschliessend auf seine Haut zu t�towieren. Die Schmuckobjekte in der Ausstellung nehmen ein ambivalentes Verh�ltnis zum menschlichen K�rper ein. Mit ihren fein polierten Oberfl�chen und geschmeidigen Formungen suchen sie die N�he zum K�rper, wollen getragen werden. Zugleich entfremdet Fabrice Gygi deren Erscheinung so, dass sie an andere Schmuckferne Objekte erinnern. Damit enthebt er sie ihrer Funktion als rein dekorative Ornamente und l�sst sie zu eigenst�ndigen Kunstwerken werden. Auch seine Installation �Colonnes� nimmt das Prinzip der Verfremdung auf. Der weiche, haut�hnliche Kunststoff, aus dem die S�ulen sind, verneint deren architektonische Funktion und verleiht ihnen eine irritierende Fragilit�t. Die Bedeutung der S�ulen als demokratisches Symbol f�r Stabilit�t und St�rke, wird untergraben und in Frage gestellt. Gygis kritischer Geist offenbart sich in all seinen Werken. Er transformiert, was er beobachtet und analysiert, um gesellschaftlich unhinterfragte Annahmen aus dem Gleichgewicht zu bringen und eine k�nstlerische Sprache zu entwickeln, welche das Verborgene offenzulegen sucht. In a playful and subversive manner he places sign systems of societal and authoritarian mechanisms into a new context and thus creates a highly affective atmosphere. In his exhibition at the Francesca Pia gallery he presents his new jewellery, graphics and installation. The graphic imagery contains a fluid motion, the round comic-like shapes seem to float across the paper. Some are punctured, which seems to mirror his fascination with tatoos; at a young age Gygi developed his tattoo art by making little sketches into little books and then transcribing them thereafter into his skin. The jewellery on exhibition is stripped of its function as a purely decorative ornament and thereby attains an autonomous character as an artwork. The highly polished surface of the silver pieces with their sinuous curves implicate the senses of the observer and seem to play with their recognisability as jewellery as he slightly reshapes them to suggest other objects. His installation �Colonnes� also engages in a transformatory act, whereby the columns are not made of stone as expected but of a soft fabric which negates it's architectural function and reveals a certain fragility. The concept of columns as symbols of democratic strength and stability seems to be subverted here and brought into question. Gygi�s rebellious spirit manifests itself in all of these artworks, he transcribes what he observes and analyses in the world in order to unhinge the commonly accepted beliefs of society and create an artistic universe that reveals the hidden. Fabrice Gygi was born in Geneva in 1965. He lives and works in Geneva.
