Kate Waters // The Air that I breathe 09.12.2011 - 28.01.2012 From December 09, 2011 to February 04, 2012 Galerie Voss will show new works by Canadian artist Kate Waters. The title of the exhibition "The Air That I Breathe" refers to the atmospheric depth and light in the paintings "Forever Young" and "Cheatin' Hearts". It also indicates the continuing, almost journal-like recording of the reality she takes part in. Just like in one breath, Waters captures random everyday scenes and their ambience with her camera and transfers them to her impressive paintings. The titles of the paintings suggest an often ironic understanding of the ambivalent situations and make the often too serious of subject matter bearable. Cultural clichés and archetypes of the present leisure culture are furthermore exposed and examined from different angles as well as promises and expectations of society. In this case the title "Cheating hearts" not only deals with a popular theme in country songs but also with the fragility of the American Dream and the cheated participants in trying to find absolute happiness in the unknown. Once the observer accepts the complexity of the paintings, which, despite their formal similarity, all have an individual story to tell, one becomes aware of a keen sense of observation with a shot of melancholy. Also another phenomenon will become evident: the observer shares the moments and selected sceneries of the artist by viewing the paintings and therefore seems to literally share that same breath of air. A catalogue is appearing parallel to the exhibition. - Vom 09. Dezember 2011 bis zum 04. Februar 2012 zeigt die Galerie Voss neue Arbeiten der kanadischen Künstlerin Kate Waters. Der Ausstellungstitel „The Air That I Breathe“ (Die Luft, die ich atme), bezieht sich auf die atmosphärische Tiefe und das Licht in den Bildern „Forever Young“ und „Cheatin' Hearts“, deutet aber auch auf die tagebuchähnliche Erfassung der Realität hin, in welcher die Künstlerin sich bewegt. Einem Atemzug gleich, fängt die Kanadierin mit ihrer Kamera beiläufig alltägliche Szenen und ihre Stimmungen ein und setzt diese in ihren Bildern stimmungsvoll um. Dabei regen die Bildtitel den Betrachter zu einem zumeist ironisch motivierten Verständnis der mehrdeutigen Situationen an und schaffen eben durch diese Ironie vieles erträglicher zu machen, was streng genommen untragbar ist. Kulturelle Klischees, sowie Archetypen in der Freizeitkultur der Gegenwart werden dabei ebenso aufgedeckt und aus verschiedensten Winkeln betrachtet wie auch die Erwartungen und Versprechen der Gesellschaft. So deutet der Titel "Cheatin' Hearts" nicht nur auf ein beliebtes Thema in amerikanischen Country Songs hin, sondern lenkt auch auf die Zerbrechlichkeit des amerikanischen Traumes und jene „betrogenen“ Beteiligten hin, die in der Fremde das vollkommene Glück suchten. Lässt man sich als Betrachter auf die Vielschichtigkeit der Bilder ein, die jedes für sich, bei allen formalen Gemeinsamkeiten eine eigene Geschichte erzählen, wird die gegenwärtige Mischung aus scharfer Beobachtungsgabe und einem Schuss Melancholie gegenwärtig. Aber auch ein anderes Phänomen wird sichtbar: Während des Betrachtens der Bilder teilt man die Beobachtungen der Künstlerin und ihre ausgewählten Szenerien und atmet in jenem Moment buchstäblich die gleiche Luft.
