Kate Waters // The Land of Kubla Khan 11 June 2010 to 17 July 2010 Die Ausstellung "The Land of Kubla Kahn" zeigt neue Arbeiten der kanadischen K�nstlerin Kate Waters. Der Ausstellungstitel bezieht sich auf das englische Gedicht "Kubla Kahn or a Vision in a Dream: A Fragment" von Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), der sein Gedicht selbst als eine psychologische Kuriosit�t bezeichnete. Es entsprang einer fiktiven R�ckbesinnung an die Realit�t, wie ein Traum auf Papier getr�bt durch eine Dosis medizinischem Opiums. Kate Waters nutzt dieses Gedicht als eine Metapher f�r die Malerei basierend auf Fotografien und gleichzeitig f�r das Herbeif�hren eines Realit�tswechsels. Kate Waters' Ausstellungstitel beziehen sich stets auf zeitgen�ssische Stellungnahmen die sie ganz subjektiv in ihren Bildern umsetzt. Ihr atmosph�rischer Realismus bleibt weiterhin ein Motiv auch in dieser Ausstellung "The Land of Kubla Kahn" die gro�teils aus �berdimensionalen �lgem�lden besteht. Die Stra�en, Gassen und Caf�s scheinen jedoch fast verlassen und menschenleer. Ansammlungen von Menschen tauchen in den Bildern von Kate Waters nur vereinzelt auf. Arbeiten wie " You're a fool if you think it is over" und "Miss Spentyouth or Oblivia and Promiscuity Downtown" zeigen Menschen in der N�he von Wasserquellen. Der Einzelne erscheint abwartend, gespannt darauf, was sich ereignen wird. In manchen Werken verwendet Kate Waters eine weitaus deutlichere Collagetechnik, um den Eindruck zu erwecken, dass eine Realit�tsgrenze �berschritten wurde, und die von dem Beobachter abverlangte Wahrnehmungsverschiebung vielleicht ein Zeichen f�r etwas bald Bevorstehendes ist. ----------------- The exhibition "The Land of Kubla Kahn" will show new works from the Canadian artist Kate Waters. The title of this new exhibition was taken from the popular English poem "Kubla Kahn or a Vision in a Dream: A Fragment" by Samuel Coleridge (1772-1834). Coleridge himself described the poem as a psychological curiosity. It is the product of a fictitious recollection of reality, like a dream on paper tainted by a dose of medicinal opium. Kate Waters uses this poem as a metaphor for the act of painting from photography and bringing forth the anticipation of a reality change. The titles of Kate Waters' exhibitions have always referred to contemporary opinions which she translates quite subjectively in her works. Kate Waters' atmospheric realism continues to be a theme even in this exhibition "The Land of Kubla Kahn". However, in this newest exhibition of mostly large scale oil paintings, the streets, alleys and caf�s seem to be almost cleared, deserted of people. The only crowds to be seen such as in the paintings titled "You're a fool if you think it is over" and "Miss Spentyouth or Oblivia and Promiscuity Downtown", are gathered around water sources and appear to be passing time, as if waiting for something or someone. In some of her paintings, Kate Waters has collaged images together in a more obvious manner, in order to bring about the impression that a reality fault line has been crossed, and that the shift in perception demanded of the viewer is perhaps an indication of the eminence of things to come. |
