Alexander Gutke 13 December 2008 � 14 March 2009 Galerija Gregor Podnar is pleased to announce the opening of Alexander Gutke�s solo exhibition. Engaging issues of self-reflexivity, illusionism, narrative and cinema, the work of Alexander Gutke is marked by a mystical materialism. Through analytically investigating the composition of devices such as cameras and slide projectors, he valorizes their unseen mechanisms as fertile spaces for the imagination. For his first solo exhibition in Berlin at Galerija Gregor Podnar Alexander Gutke exhibits four new and recent works, all of which thematically explore space, light and the void. These themes intersect to suggest a transcendental experience of seeing, like allegories of looking, in which so much is suggested with so little. The projection Cine-scope (2008) is a looped animation in which a piece of celluloid is penetrated on a quasi-microscopic level, such that the scratches and dust on the film come to resemble a forest brushing by the viewer. This work speaks to the trance-like state that may occur with the prolonged viewing of an uneventful film (such as Andy Warhol's Empire), where texture comes to replace a lack of any real narrative content. In Lighthouse (2006), a projected, white rectangle rotates by degrees as if retracing a single slide's journey around all 81 slots of the mechanism's carousel. Creating the illusion of space on the wall, the slide window's revolution could be likened to a light beam's lap around a lighthouse. Camera (2008) is a steel maquette of Thomas Edison's kinetographic film studio built in 1893. Gutke has covered the maquette in a photographic emulsion, thereby transforming the model into an exposed negative that absorbs its surroundings like a black hole. In Subtraktion (2007) the phrase 'all the colors of the dark' is repeatedly stamped on a piece of paper with the subtractive printing colors, cyan, magenta and yellow, until the surfeit of color generates a near-black blob. By saturating the white piece of paper with color, Gutke subtracts light from its surface, creating, in effect, all the colors of the dark. --Chris Sharp Alexander Gutke 13. Dezember 2008 � 14. Alexander Gutkes Arbeiten vereinen selbstreflexive, iIlusionistische, narrative und kinematographische Elemente und sind von mystischer Materialit�t gekennzeichnet. Analytisch untersucht er Mechanismen technischer Ger�te wie Kameras oder Diaprojektoren bis auf ihr ungesehenes Inneres, und legt neue, imagin�re R�ume offen. F�r seine erste Einzelausstellung in Berlin in der Galerija Gregor Podnar zeigt er vier aktuelle und neue Arbeiten, die in Bezug auf Raum, Licht und die Leere miteinander in Verbindung stehen. Sie wollen transzendentale Seh-Erfahrungen suggerieren, die, wie allegorische Momente, so vieles mit geringsten Mitteln andeuten. Die Projektion Cine-scope (2008) ist eine sich iederholende Animation, in der ein St�ck Filmstreifen bei anscheinend mikroskopischer Vergr��erung durchleuchtet wird, so dass Kratzer und Staub, die sich darauf befinden, in ihrer Projektion Formen einer mit Pinsel �bertupften Landschaft �hneln. Die Arbeit verweist auf den Trance-artigen Moment, der bei einem ereignislosen Film auftreten kann (wie in Andy Warhols �Empire�), wenn die Textur des Films den Mangel an narrativem Inhalt kompensiert. In Lighthouse (2006) bewegt sich das projizierte wei�e Rechteck Grad um Grad, als ob es die komplette Reise eines einzelnen Dias in einem 81 Dia-Karussell-Projektor durchlaufen w�rde. Die Projektion vermittelt die Illusion von Raum auf der Wand und die Umdrehung des Diafensters erinnert an die Scheinwerferbewegungen eines Leuchtturms. Camera (2008) ist ein nachgebautes Stahl-Modell des um 1893 von Thomas Edison erbauten kinematografischen Filmstudios. Gutke hat das Modell mit einer fotografischen Emulsion �berzogen und es so mit den Eigenschaften eines belichteten Negativs versehen, wodurch es das Licht aus seiner Umgebung wie ein schwarzes Loch absorbiert. In Subtraktion (2007) wurde der Satz 'all the colors of the dark' so oft mit den Substraktions-Druckfarben Zyan, Magenta und Gelb auf wei�es Papier gestempelt, bis die �bers�ttigte Farbe einen beinahe schwarzen, gro�en Klecks erzeugt. Mit dem Farbauftrag aufs wei�e Papier entzieht Gutke der Oberfl�che ihre Reflektionskraft, und es tauchen in der Tat alle Farben der Nacht auf. --Chris Sharp |
