Arte, musica, teatro), della Triennale (What Will Come, has Already Come) e del Teatro Verdi (Woyzeck on the Highveld). La mostra sar� inaugurata il giorno 19 marzo 2011 alle ore 11.00 con la performance dell�artista �I am not me the horse is not mine�, che si terr� al piano terra, nello spazio principale totalmente oscurato, adibito a teatro, e durer� circa quaranta minuti. Al termine di questo straordinario evento dal vivo lo spazio sar� riallestito per ospitare l�omonima installazione di 8 proiezioni video. Il titolo di questo lavoro deriva da un�espressione contadina russa utilizzata per negare la colpa, ed usata da Bukharin, il fedele luogotenente di Lenin, in una seduta del Comitato centrale del 1937, nel tentativo di sottrarsi alla �purga� staliniana, e infine, alla morte. Sia la conferenza/performance che l'installazione video sono ispirati al racconto di Gogol �Il naso�, trasposto poi in opera nel 1930 da Dimitri Shostakovich, nel clima della repressione staliniana. Nella performance Kentridge esplora gli antecedenti letterari del racconto e gioca a mettere d�accordo il suo s�, diviso tra il suo corpo fisico, le sue ombre e la continua entrata in scena di altri William Kentridge in forma di proiezione. Anche gli 8 film sono parte del grande progetto che ha visto l�artista autore delle scene e regista al Metropolitan Opera di New York nel marzo 2010 dell�opera �The Nose�, fra breve di nuovo in scena al prossimo festival di Aix en Provence, in luglio 2011. La mostra prosegue al primo piano con l�epopea del �Naso� come eroe equestre, e del suo antieroico e donchisciottesco cavallo, tradotta nei pi� tradizionali mezzi espressivi dell'arazzo e della scultura in bronzo. Monumentali arazzi, insieme a piccole sculture in bronzo interagiscono sugli stessi temi alternandosi e agendo come sulla scena di un teatro. Completa l'installazione al piano, disposta sulla grande terrazza esterna alla galleria, una grande scultura in acciaio dedicata alle donne sudafricane che trasportano al tramonto la brace ardente in contenitori posti sulla testa. �Firewalker� � il prototipo in scala ridotta (3 m) di una imponente scultura pubblica realizzata a Johannesburg nel 2009. Al secondo piano della galleria sono in mostra grandi e piccoli disegni che rappresentano campi di olivi, piante tipiche del nostro Mediterraneo, figure mitologiche o completamente reinventate dall'artista, acquarelli a cui si ispirano i nuovi e inediti mosaici, recente esperienza artistica di Kentridge dopo le sue numerose visite a Napoli e Pompei. Sono esposti, inoltre, meravigliosi disegni a carboncino di cineprese e dell�artista che si autorappresenta come uno scriba. Queste immagini, derivate dall'incursione nell'antichit� egizia originata dagli studi per le scene del Flauto Magico, e poi dal recente lavoro al Louvre "Carnet d'Egypte", propone l'associazione tra l'attivit� di registrazione-documentazione attraverso la scrittura e il disegno e lo strumento di registrazione meccanica della realt� usato da Kentridge come uno straordinario medium artistico. Infine, un riferimento all�ultimo progetto �Refusal of Time� un work in progress per la prossima edizione di �Documenta 13�, che si terr� a Kassel a giugno 2012, a cui l�artista � stato invitato. Dal 1997, anno della sua partecipazione alla X edizione di Documenta a Kassel, le personali di William Kentridge (Johannesburg, 1955) sono ospitate nei musei e nelle gallerie di tutto il mondo, a cominciare dal MCA di San Diego (1998) e dal Museum of Modern Art di New York (1999). Nel 1998 il Palais des Beaux-Arts di Bruxelles ha presentato una mostra antologica delle sue opere, che tra il 1998 e il 1999 si � spostata in altri musei europei. Nel 2004 il Castello di Rivoli ha ospitato una retrospettiva itinerante, curata da Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev. Nel 2008 ha presentato il progetto �(REPEAT) from the beginning/Da capo� alla Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa e al Teatro la Fenice di Venezia e nel 2009 la mostra �Strade della Citt��, al Museo di Capodimonte di Napoli. Il 2009 ha segnato l�avvio di �5 Themes�, una grande mostra partita dal SFMOMA di San Francisco, e presentata poi, tra gli altri Musei, al MoMA di New York, al Jeu de Paume di Parigi, Albertina di Vienna e dal 4 marzo all� Israel Museum di Gerusalemme. Si ringrazia Epson Italia WILLIAM KENTRIDGE Lia Rumma gallery in Milan is pleased to announce the personal exhibition of William Kentridge, which is being held at the same time as the events at Teatro alla Scala (The Magic Flute), Palazzo Reale (WILLIAM KENTRIDGE & MILANO. Arte, musica, teatro), Palazzo della Triennale (What Will Come, has Already Come) and Teatro Verdi (Woyzeck on the Highveld). The exhibition opens March 19, 2011 at 11.00 am with the performance of the artist entitled �I am not me the horse is not mine". The performance will be held on the ground floor in the main space of the gallery which will be completely darkened and used as a theatre. It will last about forty minutes. At the end of this extraordinary live event the space will be rearranged to house the homonymous installation with 8 video projections. The title of the work derives from a Russian rural proverb used to deny guilt and used by Bukharin, the faithful lieutenant of Lenin, in a session of the Central Committee in 1937 in an attempt to escape the Stalinist �purge� and, eventually, death. Both the talk/performance and the video installation are inspired by Gogol�s story �The Nose�, turned into an opera in 1930 by Dimitri Shostakovich in the climate of Stalinist repression. In the performance, Kentridge explores the literary precedents of the story and plays at reaching an agreement between his self, divided between his physical body, his shadows and the continuous entrance of other William Kentridges in the form of video projections. The 8 films are also part of the ambitious project in which the artist was involved both as set designer and director of the opera at the Metropolitan Opera - Lincoln Centre in New York in March 2010. The opera will soon be performed again at the forthcoming Aix en Provence Festival, in July 2011. The exhibition continues on the first floor with the epic story of the �Nose� as an equestrian hero, and of his antiheroic and don quixotesque horse, transformed into the more traditional expressive means of a tapestry and a bronze statue. Two monumental tapestries made by the artist, together with small bronze sculptures, interact with the same themes, alternating between solids and voids as on a theatre stage. The installation is completed with a large steel sculpture mounted on the large terrace outside the gallery and dedicated to South African women who, at dusk, carry burning coals in containers balanced on their heads. Entitled �Firewalker�, the statue is the reduced scale prototype (3 m) of an imposing public statue made in Johannesburg in 2009. The second floor of the gallery contains exhibitions of large and small drawings that depict a range of subjects: fields with olive trees, typical of Mediterranean flora, mythological figures or figures that have been completely reinvented by the artist, watercolours which have inspired the new mosaics displayed for the first time, the latest work of the artist following his numerous visits to Naples and Pompeii. Other works on display include the marvellous charcoal drawings of film cameras and the artist himself who portrays himself as a scribe. These images, taken from the artist�s forays into Egyptian art for his studies of the sets for the Magic Flute � and subsequently from his recent work for the Louvre entitled "Carnet d'Egypte" - show the association between the recording/documentary activities through writing and drawing and the device for recording reality mechanically used by Kentridge as an extraordinary artistic medium. Lastly, there is a reference to his latest project, �Refusal of Time�, a work in progress for the forthcoming �Documenta 13�, due to be held at Kassel in June 2012 to which the artist has been invited. Since 1997, the year of his participation at Documenta X in Kassel, the personal exhibitions of William Kentridge (Johannesburg, 1955) have been held in museums and galleries worldwide, beginning with the MCA in San Diego (1998) and the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1999).
