Hales Gallery is pleased to present LA based artist, Adam Ross' second solo exhibition.

In The Eternal Space Between, Ross displays an ambitious new body of work where using his distinguished and meticulous technique of pouring, merging and layering paint, he's produced immaculately surfaced, flamboyant abstractions. The approach in this new series has moved away from the overt use of urban landscapes and narrative and back in to the abstract realm. Obscured images that picture complex and ambiguous structures now teeter on the edge of formal breakdown. This further progression from representational modes has led to Ross investigating the core of his practice and the relevance of painting itself as a medium.

An aspect of this change in Ross' practice is the manipulation of subtle figurative references which when simultaneously positioned in tandem, obscure each other's relevance. It is this coexistence of the recognisable with the abstract and space with non-space that result in multiple disorientations and something that affects Ross' painterly sensibilities. These elaborate hybrids formed from these strange bedfellows, describe the image of when both painterly techniques and hints of figurative form collide.

Although Ross undoubtedly expresses a captivation with the abstract, representational traditions are not entirely removed from the work. Vivid brush strokes and bold coloured smears establish references to landscape and topographic imagery. It is also easy to see how a constant flow of Science Fiction pumped out by the LA film studios and the strange vernacular architecture of the region have also influenced Ross' creative vision. This relationship to LA as an environment is important to Ross as the experience of living and working there accentuates the city's fictional qualities, something that has become particularly poignant to the artist.

These new works describe Ross' inquisitive explorations into compositional structures whilst continually controlling the vibrant use of paint, and his characteristically suggestive nods to visual stimuli of the occupied world. It is this controlled system of mark making that formally frees Ross' paintings from any coherent narrative or form and ultimately questions the curious union of time, space and form.

Adam Ross' work is widely collected and can be found in a large number of public collections including The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (MOCA), The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego and The Orange County Museum of Art. He has also appeared in numerous exhibitions at major museums including The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The New Museum, New York; The Arken Museum of Art, Copenhagen; The Center for Contemporary Art, Cincinnati; The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.
