Passing Thoughts and Making Plans

An exhibition curated by Catherine Yass
Part of the Jerwood Visual Arts Encounters series

Jerwood Space, 171 Union Street, London SE1 0LN
Open: Mon - Fri, 10am - 5pm; Sat - Sun, 10am - 3pm

Passing Thoughts and Making Plans is an exhibition that brings together artists who use photography as part of their thought process; as a tool for working out, following and shaping ideas that will develop into a finished work.

The concept behind the exhibition comes from Yass desire to reveal work in process and to consider that the experience of viewing preparations and sketches for art works holds complexities and interest in its own right. Passing thoughts and making plans features previously unseen work from internationally renowned artists Tacita Dean, Jeremy Deller, Sarah Jones, Alex Katz, Sharon Lockhart, Cornelia Parker, Richard Wentworth and Rachel Whiteread.

The exhibition is the third in the Jerwood Visual Arts Encounters series, which act as conversations about and between the disciplinary fields of the Jerwood Visual Arts programme. Passing Thoughts and Making Plans is a conversation about the role of photography in each of the artists practice and aims to give visitors a deeper understanding of the process of making work, through having a rare glimpse of the preparatory work behind a finished piece. Finished examples of the artists work, displayed in books and catalogues, will also be on show.

Photographic images are often part of a fluid chain of thoughts and notes that cross over into different areas. They might be snap shot prints or contacts stuck in a notebook, incorporated into a drawing, combined with writing or just left on a table amongst other bits and pieces. This process is what I wanted to convey in the exhibition. Catherine Yass, Curator Passing Thoughts and Making Plans

A series of free talks and discussions with the curator and invited guests will accompany the exhibition. These events will take place from 6-8pm on 23 & 30 November, full details of which will be announced on www.jerwoodvisualarts.org shortly.

Notes to Editors:
Jerwood Visual Arts is a programme of awards, prizes and exhibitions that celebrate a range of disciplines across the visual arts, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and digital moving image. Jerwood Visual Arts a major initiative of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

The major exhibitions in the Jerwood Visual Arts programme are structured as conversations within specific disciplines; for example the Jerwood Drawing Prize, Jerwood Contemporary Painters, Jerwood Sculpture Prize and Jerwood Contemporary Makers.

Within this programme, the Encounters series aims to explore the issues and territories in the borderlands between the disciplinary fields. These areas of investigation are identified in conjunction with invited curators and artists. Previous exhibitions in the Encounters series have included Space to Draw (17 January 10 February 2008) and Invisible Cities (22 January 22 February 2009).

The Jerwood Charitable Foundation is dedicated to imaginative and responsible funding of the arts, supporting emerging and established artists at important stages in their development and across all art-forms. In addition to Jerwood Visual Arts, the Jerwood Charitable Foundation also works with artists and organisations across the performing arts, music, literature and film. Current partner organisations include Glyndebourne (Jerwood Chorus Development scheme), Royal Society of Literature (Jerwood/ RSL Awards for Non-Fiction), Sadlers Wells (the Jerwood Studio) and the Royal Court (Jerwood New Playwrights).
