SCOTT REEDER

May 12th - July 28th, 2012

Kavi Gupta CHICAGO is proud to present its first solo exhibition by Scott Reeder. Reeder is highly regarded for his multiple talents as a conceptual artist. He is known for his paintings, sculptures, and performances.

For the past few years, Reeder has honed an approach to painting with noodles. Museological in scale and executed with precise skill, the paintings recall the history of monochromatic works as they are seen in multiple modern art movements from Russian Constructivism to Minimalism to the french BMPT painting group. Known as his Pasta Paintings, the works are a saccharine, but serious critique of the essentialist approach to understanding the nature of painting as a medium in 20th century art. Expanding on his critique of the history and stylistic traditions of art-making, Reeder will unveil new sculptural works which continuously carry his idiosyncratic humor and wit. As in his paintings, the sculptural work explores ideas of both the presence and absence of the artist's hand, whether it be as simp as a gesture, fold, crease or his personal hand-wrighting manifested in neon. The sculptural work emphasizes how Reeder values the role of mark making and expression in art while supplying a good-natured joke of the weight often given to Conceptual Art.

Scott Reeder (b. 1970 in Milwaukee, WI): Recent solo exhibitions include Chicago Works: Scott Reeder, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; LUCE Gallery, Torino: and Gavlak Projects in West Palm Beach. In recent years, Reeder has presented numerous exhibitions at galleries, including Pat Hearn Gallery (1999); Gavin Brown Enterprises, NY; China Art Objects (with Laura Owens, 2000); and Jack Hanley Gallery (2006). His work has been curated into notable institutional group exhibitions such as Utopia Station (2003) at the Venice Biennale; Constellations (2009) at the MCA Chicago; and Abstract America (2011) at the Saatchi Gallery in London. In addition, Reeder's work as a founder of the curatorial think-tank Milwaukee International is significant. With the group, he has organized the eccentric Milwaukee International, an art fair housed in a Polish pub and bowling alley, and Dark Fair (2008) held at the Swiss Institute in NYC where exhibitors' booths were illuminated only by candles, flashlights, or light sculpture. reeder lives and works in Chicago where he teaches at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's painting & drawing department. He is currently finishing work on his feature film entitled, Moon Dust (2012).

HENNING STRASSBURGER
I Am A Girl

May 12th until July 28th 2012

Kavi Gupta CHICAGO is proud to present I Am A Girl, a solo exhibition by the Berlin- based artist Henning Strassburger. Foremost known as a painter, but also known for his conceptual music videos, the discourse of style, expression, and personality is enmeshed in Strassburger's works. From the artist's 'Emo" paintings in 2008-09 to his 'Die Neue Harte' video in 2010 where he mimics the dress and gestures of popular singers like Tom Jones or the german Roland Kaiser, Strassburger's works question the performative nature of gesture and style. WIth his recent paintings, Strassburger has sought to "empty out the center" by "putting things off to the side,: and aim he shares with a number of influences, from French post-impressionist Bonnard to the late New York abstract painter Moira Dryer. In his exhibition I Am A Girl, Strassburger presents new paintings and a digitally printed curtain that frame the artist's position in the context of the history of contemporary performance and conceptual art.

Henning Strassburger (b. 1983 in Meissen, DE) lives and works in Berlin. Most recent solo and two person exhibitions include So Athletic with Wendy White, 2011, at Kunstverein am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz e.V. Berlin, Softidrink, 2011 at Kunstverein Heppenheim, IMAGE, 2011 at Galerie Fiebach & Minninger in Cologne. Other notable exhibitions include Abstract Ilona with Tim Berresheim, Henry Butzer, and Aribert von Ostrowski, 2011, at Kavi Gupta Gallery in Berlin; Lutz Braun, Diefenbach, Mayer, and Strassburger, 2012, Galerie Christian Nagel; and Informal Relations, 2010, at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. Strassburger attended the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf, graduating in 2009.
