Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Katharina Fritsch: The Garden, the next exhibition in his gallery at 522 West 22nd Street. The exhibition will include over twenty new sculptures and silkscreens, including her latest life-size figure, Giant, an all-gray cave man holding a large club. This will be Katharina Fritschs fourth one-person exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery since 1996.

The gallery has been re-built by the artist so that the works in the exhibition are featured in four rooms in the middle of the space. In each of them an iconic sculpture is surrounded by three silkscreens printed in a matte oil-based ink on thick plastic panels.

The sculptures in the exhibition include a life-sized black figurine of St. Katherine, an idealized gray vase, an over-sized black snake, and a pair of bright blue kidneys sitting on a checkered table cloth. All of these works are surrounded by silkscreened idyllic landscapes printed in bright monochrome colors derived from postcards collected during her childhood.

Katharina Fritsch lives and works in Dsseldorf. She represented Germany in the 1995 Venice Biennale and has had one-person exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Tate Modern, London; the K21 Stndehaus, Dsseldorf; the Kunstmuseum, Basel; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. A retrospective exhibition of her work, curated by Bice Curiger, will open at the Kunsthaus Zurich in June 2009.

Katharina Fritsch: The Garden will remain on view through June 14th at 522 West 22nd Street (between 10th & 11th Avenues). Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
