GUNILLA KLINGBERG COSMIC MATTER JUNE 19-JULY 26, 2008 Galerie Nordenhake is pleased to announce 'Cosmic Matter', an exhibition by Swedish artist Gunilla Klingberg. Cosmic Matter is an architecturally hermetic, mixed-media installation composed of icons and symbols from science and spiritualism reflecting on the colonization of the moon. In 2006 NASA, in collaboration with twelve other space agencies, announced the project The Global Exploration Strategy, which includes plans to construct a moon base and to sell the moon�s natural resources to private enterprises. This outsourcing compromises the almost thirty year old UN treaty that reaffirms the importance of a strictly peaceful use of the moon, asserting that it should be used solely for the benefit of the international community at large, not any individual actor. In addition the moon�s mythological and symbolic role is an important theme in this work. The lunar cycle has played a significant role in art history, spirituality, religion and science, and Klingberg has intentionally chosen a full moon night for her opening in Berlin. Cosmic Matter was first realized at the Istanbul Biennial 2007. In the gallery a pre-fabricated scaffolding serves as a framework for a tape printed with a pattern of the moon�s phases, copyright signs, the Helium 3 symbol and a stylized motif from NASA�s web page. The tape is woven between the scaffolding in variable heights, lengths and widths, thus relating to cordoning-tape and the claming of territory. The hermetic hub created by the tape is reflected in steel-pictograms of dream catchers, a Native American folkloristic motif. The floor standing mirror text, Global Exploration Strategy, also reflects its environs and was produced by local sign-manufacturers in Istanbul in the standard style and font of signage used by banks and other commercial institutions. The mirror text interplays with a wall painting based on the Apollo 11 eagle logo. As a mythical symbol for the sacred and solitary, the eagle has embodied the exploration as a well-intended bold venture. Multiplied and painted on the gallery wall as a graffiti stencil it implies more ominous intentions, juxtaposing exploration with exploitation and representing the unholy alliance of the spiritual and the commercial. The hermetic architecture, the various media and the accumulation of symbols and icons create a dense psychedelic environment that is elated, visually spectacular and seductive. As in earlier works such as Mantric Mutation or Repeat Pattern, the accumulation, repetition and organization of symbols � be they mundane corporate logos or the image of the moon � give rise to a growing unease as their familiarity is distorted. In this way Klingberg�s works deal with the collective unconscious and the viral aspects of visual language. Gunilla Klingberg was born Stockholm in 1966. She lives and works in Stockholm. Cosmic Matter is also the title of a new monograph on the artist produced by IASPIS and Propexus. It will be available at the gallery. Klingberg has exhibited internationally and has realized several major public commissions in Sweden. Her solo exhibitions include A Whiter Shade of Pale, Stade (2005), KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art, Studio K, Helsinki (2004), Kunstverein Langenhagen (2003) and K�nstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2002). She participated in Departure: Further Explorations in Print, Lincolnshire (2008), with a solo project in the 10th Istanbul Biennale (2007), in Altered, Stitched and Gathered, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center/MoMA, New York (2006), the Moderna Exhibition at Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2006) and What Business Are You In, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, USA (2005). She will participate in the group show Far West at Arnolfini Contemporary Arts Organization in Bristol! , UK (6/27-8/31). This is the artist's second solo exhibition with the gallery. JULI 2008 Die schwedischen K�nstlerin Gunilla Klingberg zeigt in ihrer Einzelausstellung ihre j�ngste raumgreifende Installation �Cosmic Matter�, die in unterschiedlichsten Medien sowie in Form von Piktogrammen und Symbolen aus Wissenschaft und Spiritualit�t die Kolonisation des Mondes thematisiert. Im Jahr 2006 k�ndigte die NASA gemeinsam mit zw�lf weiteren Raumfahrtbeh�rden das Projekt The Global Exploration Strategy an, das den Plan beinhaltet, eine Mondbasis zu errichten und die nat�rlichen Ressourcen des Mondes an private Unternehmen zu verkaufen. Diese Fremdvergaben verletzten das fast drei�ig Jahre alte UN-Abkommen, wonach die Nutzung des Monds ausschlie�lich friedvoll und die internationale Gemeinschaft erfolgen soll und nicht durch individuelle Akteure. Weiterhin ist die mythologische und symbolische Bedeutung des Monds zentrales Thema der Installation. Mondphasen spielen eine bedeutsame Rolle in Kunstgeschichte, Spiritualit�t, Religion und Wissenschaft und Klingberg hat bewusst eine Vollmondnacht f�r die Er�ffnung ihrer Ausstellung gew�hlt. Cosmic Matter wurde zum ersten Mal 2007 auf der Istanbul Biennale realisiert. In der Galerie dient ein vorgefertigtes Bauger�st als Rahmen f�r ein Band, das mit einem Muster aus Mondphasen, Copyrightsymbolen, Helium-3 Zeichen und einem stilisierten Motiv der NASA-Internetseite bedruckt ist. Das Band umspannt das Ger�st in unterschiedlichen H�hen, L�ngen und Breiten und erinnert so an ein Absperrband f�r die Demarkation von Gel�nde. Es erzeugt einen geschlossenen Innenraum, der sich in den st�hlernen Piktogrammen von Traumf�ngern � einem folkloristischen Motiv amerikanischer Ureinwohner � spiegelt. Ein auf dem Boden stehendes Textobjekt mit den Worten Global Exploration Strategy spiegelt ebenfalls seine Umgebung. Es wurde von Schilderfabrikanten in Istanbul, im standardisierten Stil und Schriftsatz f�r die Beschilderung von Banken und Unternehmen gefertigt. Die Installation wird durch eine Wandmalerei, die auf dem Adler-Logo der Raumf�hre Apollo 11 basiert, erg�nzt. Der Adler, mythologisches Symbol f�r das Heilige und Solit�re, sollte die Monderkundung als mutiges Unternehmen voll bester Absichten verk�rpern. Vervielfacht und wie eine Graffiti auf die Galeriew�nde aufgemalt, deutet er hier ein bedenkliches Vorhaben an. Er stellt Erkundung und Ausbeutung auf eine Ebene und repr�sentiert das heillose B�ndnis des Spirituellen mit dem Kommerziellen. Klingberg schafft durch die hermetische Architektur, den Gebrauch unterschiedlichster Medien und die Anh�ufung von Symbolen und ikonischen Referenzen ein dichtes psychedelisches Umfeld das beschwingend, visuell spektakul�r und verf�hrerisch wirkt. Wie ihren fr�heren Arbeiten Mantric Mutation oder Repeat Pattern erzeugen die Anh�ufung, Wiederholung und Anordnung der Symbole � seien es profane Firmenlogos oder das Bild des Monds �, die so in ihrer Vertrautheit verzerrt sind, ein zunehmendes Unbehagen. Ihre Arbeiten thematisieren so das kollektiv Unbewusste und die verdeckten Aspekte visueller Sprache. Die Publikation Cosmic Matter ist auch in der Galerie erh�ltlich. Gunilla Klingberg wurde 1966 in Stockholm geboren. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Stockholm. Klingbergs Arbeiten sind in internationalen Ausstellungen zu sehen und sie hat mehrere bedeutende �ffentliche Auftr�ge in Schweden erhalten. Ihre Einzelausstellungen waren unter anderem A Whiter Shade of Pale in Stade (2005), im KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art, Studio K, Helsinki (2004), im Kunstverein Langenhagen (2003), und im K�nstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2002).
