YVES BEAUMONT 'Light/Licht' new paintings Private View Thursday 7 February 6 - 9 pm 'Beauty is truth, truth beauty, - that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.' John Keats, Ode upon a Grecian Urn' studio 1.1 is very excited to present Yves Beaumont's new paintings in his first solo show in the UK. Over the last year he has achieved outstanding success, with many shows in the Low Countries, and is rightly making waves further afield, in Spain, Switzerland and now in London. Our show will also run concurrently with his first solo show at Dagmar de Pooter, his Antwerp gallery. Marc Ruyters, the editor of the leading Belgian art magazine 'H-Art' has already championed his work and will be featuring Yves in the next issue. Beaumont paints pictures of a beauty which nevertheless confound Keats' dictum, for though their genesis is the Flemish landscape they are taken, via ruthless simplification, as far from that Truth as can be, revealing a quite different beauty in a closer reality - the truth of the masterfully worked paint before us. The vehicle carrying the image through into our world is always light; defining the landscape at the dissolving midpoint of image and abstraction, light is the constant element explaining the world to the painter. As the act of painting obscures the landscape a different light reveals the work, leading us in turn to a re-interpretation of that work and its point and place of origin. Our focus changes in looking, as we search what was the landscape upon what is the canvas: the paintings recede constantly but are stopped before any horizon. With this unnerving sense of unresolved distance these fragments become new; simultaneously true and transformed from truth. His work holds you in front of it with an over-riding melancholy question - how can we look into the past? For as much as we re-attach these abstractions to a landscape of our own imagination, what is here has long disappeared, only exists as an imperfect memory, a constant and fluid erasing and establishing of its presence in paint.
