Having worked with sculptor John Summers for the past three years, since when he has shown with us both in the gallery and at two successive zooartfairs, we are delighted to present his first solo show at studio1.1.

Conjuring organic forms from seemingly inchoate masses, his work counters a prevalent strain of literalism in contemporary sculpture, with an instinctive understanding of the capabilities of matter combined with an interest in classic sculptural concerns. Form, weight, and balance are held in tension, the tectonic plates which shift and disturb; configuring his melancholy sculptural landscape. Resting uneasily upon them an anxious mass awaits transformation. Forming and formed by these elements, the work achieves by other means the 'instress' of Gerard Manley Hopkins' verse. For Summers too it is an almost visionary struggle with the constraints of language. The poetry here is embodied in the lightness and the grit, at the service of some dark comedy in a world of metal and mud. The comedy of war perhaps.

John Summers studied at the Slade and the Royal College, and was selected for New Contemporaries in 2002. In 2006 he won the Mark Tanner Prize for sculpture.
