GALERIE VOLKER DIEHL is pleased to announce Frauke Eigens new exhibition Neue Arbeiten, showing works recently created in Japan.

Frauke Eigens new photographs works show patterned surfaces, structures and projections of nature in detailed extracts. Extraordinary richness of details and fine gradations of darkness and light characterize her photography. Thus, a high level of reduction in form and content is reached. Through this reduction, she picks up the Japanese notion of emptiness existing since the 12th century. The fulfilled emptiness and the aesthetic simplicity are not only expression of the Zen philosophy, but also a general principle of the design. In her work, Frauke Eigen is striving for moments of grace and successful form, not the mise en scne, but the calmness and concentration distinguish her works, which become placeless and timeless through their reduction. In this respect, the motif becomes secondary, the close focus on the image detail leads to the abstraction of the subjects being portrayed. Hence, the observer is invited to solve the puzzle of the image motif.

An unattainable state of emotion is inherent in the minimal aesthetic of Frauke Eigens works. The beauty of the composition of her photographs also stems from the artists choice of dramaturgy of light. Through the conscious decision to work with analog photography, the choice of photo paper and the subsequent mounting with rice glue, Frauke Eigen succeeds in a process of abstraction showing the finesse of the nuances, which the eyes have discovered or merely guessed at the object.

Frauke Eigen was born in Aurich (Germany) in 1969 and studied photography at the Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design and Fine Arts at the Royal College of Art in London. Several scholarships and activities as visiting lecturer followed. The artist lives and works in Berlin.
