If.... Samuel Hasler: Block
preview 6 May 2010

g39 presents an evolving exhibition and accompanying performance by Cardiff based artist Sam Hasler. A large square blackboard hangs in the centre of the gallerys front window which the artist uses to comment on censorship, access, borders and obstructions within visual culture.

The performance is viewable from the street from 8pm on Tuesday 4 May 8pm on Thursday 6 May.
The space will then be open for a special end-of-performance viewing on Thursday 6 May from 7-8pm.

We will then be open during normal hours: 7-22 May, Wednesday - Saturday 11-5.30.

The exhibit begins with a 48-hour continuous performance work, preceding and informing a gradual construction of works within the space, responding to both the city and his unique solitary position.

A large square blackboard, an object evident within Samuels drawings for some time hangs in the centre of the gallerys front window. Impeding a clear view into the space, this visual obstruction comments on censorship, access, borders and obstructions within visual culture.

Alluding to issues of restriction and admittance, Samuels work for If.... has been inspired by a video work by Mark Wallinger entitled Via Dolorosa 2002. In this work Wallinger presented the passion scene from the film Jesus of Nazareth, with a large black square at the centre of the screen, the only visible part the outer couple of inches of the screen and the core action almost always obscured. Such systems of blocking access, or restricting access to the work has been an often-successful tool for Samuel in order to create a sense of strangeness and otherness within a space.
