Milena Dragicevic: Erections for Transatlantica Opening: Thursday, January 18 2011, 7 pm Exhibition runs: January 19 March 5 2011 From January 19 to March 5 2011, Galerie Martin Janda is showing new works by Milena Dragicevic. The two series of paintings Supplicants and Erections for Transatlantica will be at the core of the exhibition. Although the artist has already worked on variations of themes and titles in the past, Supplicants is the first series which rigorously adheres to a concept. All paintings within the cycle are representations of the human head, but the portrayed individuals physiognomies are changed, deranged and even deconstructed through various formal interventions: The paintings are not about the models, they are 'stand-ins' for something else. (Milena Dragicevic). The second series, Erections for Transatlantica, explores the theme of modernist sculptural painting unfolding organically in front of two-colored canvases. Milena Dragicevic was born in Knin (Yugoslavia) in 1965 and grew up in Canada. She currently lives and works in London. |
