LOVE AND CRUELTY Thom Puckey Michael Kirkham Johan Tahon October 29 – December 10 2011 Opening October 29 3 – 7 pm. The three artists present new work, based on an idea conceived by Thom Puckey. Thom Puckey and Michael Kirkham are both represented by the gallery; Johan Tahon has been invited to take part. Thom Puckey Thom Puckey (Kent,1948) moved to Amsterdam in 1978, where he has lived and worked since. French filmmaker Jean Luc Godard once said: "All you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun". It is a tradition that Thom Puckey has embraced. He selects models. He selects weapons, but the pose is the crux. It pivots on a dramatic moment that, with a reference to the neo-realism of the late 19th century, is translated in marble. The technique that Puckey has made his own is remarkable; Puckey is able to use white or black marble in such a way that sublimely contrasts the hardness of the material and the soft, almost flesh-like quality of the actual sculptures. The softness and semi-transparency of the marble brings the female figures to life. Thom Puckey trained at Croydon College of Art, Slade School of Fine Art and at the Royal College of Art. His work has been exhibited at the Documenta and in prestigious art institutions such as the Vleeshal, (Middelburg, 1986), Stedelijk Museum, (Amsterdam, 1990), Museo Centro Luigi Pecci (Prato, Italy, 2010) and the 8th biennale of Gwangju 1000LIVES in South Korea in 2010. Michael Kirkham The work of Michael Kirkham (1971 Blackpool, GB) is noted for depicting solitary figures captured in provocative poses. The scenes are raw, relentless and uncompromising. In Kirkham’s paintings, carnal desire and the indulgence of the flesh is a mechanism that makes viewers feel uncomfortable. Nevertheless, Kirkham’s invariably meticulous and loving execution, his sincerity and all but cynical attitude, compels the viewer to look at his uncompromising scenes. Michael Kirkham completed his formal training at the Glasgow School of Art and De Ateliers in Amsterdam. After graduating, he lived and worked in Brussels for three years before moving to Berlin in 2002. His work is represented in the collections of Gemeentemuseum The Hague, the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem and the Scheringa Museum in Spanbroek. In 2009 Kirkham took part in the exhibition Diana + Actaeon, Der Verbotene Blick auf die Nacktheit in Museum Kunst Palast, Dusseldorf. Last summer, his work was included in exhibitions in Sweden and Norway, and he took part in the exhibition Zwei Sammler in the Dreitorhallen in Hamburg. Johan Tahon Johan Tahon (Menen, 1965) studied sculpture at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Gent. He lives and works in Munkzwalm (Belgium) and Istanbul (Turkey). Tahon has exhibited his work regularly in the Netherlands and abroad since 1994. “Ce qui est fait n’est pas fini” (Baudelaire). “For Tahon the act of sculpture is ‘the excavation of a cavity to make an object that, in turn, creates infinite space’. Figures are visible in the emptiness, floating figures in the space – the aura – surrounding them. Tahon’s sculptures invoke the vacuum, but at the same time, also accumulate volume, they force dazed viewers to take distance.” (From Observatorium. Alles wat blijft moet worden, Paul Depondt 2008) After several studio exhibitions, Tahon’s first breakthrough arrived when he took part in the group show 'De Rode Poort' in 1996 in the Ghent Museum of Contemporary Art. Tahon had caught the attention of Belgium’s most influential curator and museum director Jan Hoet (e.g. Documenta 9), who made it possible for Tahon to interact with world level artists in this internationally renowned exhibition. From then on Tahon got the full support of Hoet who, in 2003, offered him the solo show Self-Self, in the S.M.A.K. Ghent.Meanwhile his work has been exhibited in prestigious museums including the S.M.A.K. (Ghent), the MuHKA (Antwerp), the PMMK (Oostende), IKOB (Eupen), the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), the GEM (The Hague), major exhibitions such as Beaufort (Ostend) and the Lustwarande (Tilburg) and in galleries like Deweer Gallery (Otegem), Galeri Artist in Istanbul and Berlin, Galerie Van de Weghe (Antwerp) and venues including the Ministry of Finance (The Hague), the courtyard of the Topkapi Palace (Istanbul) and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington DC). --- LOVE AND CRUELTY Thom Puckey Michael Kirkham Johan Tahon 29 oktober – 10 december 2011 Opening 29 oktober van 1500 – 1900 uur. Je kunt figuren in de leegte zien, zwevende figuren in de ruimte –de aura- die ze omringt. De beelden van tahon roepen de leegte op, maar tegelijk winnen ze ook aan volume, ze dwingen de verbaasde toeschouwer tot afstand nemen.” (Uit Observatorium. Alles wat blijft moet worden, Paul Depondt 2008) Na enkele ateliertentoonstellingen kent Tahon een eerste doorbraak als gevolg van zijn deelname aan de groepstentoonstellingen 'De Rode Poort' (1996) in het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst te Gent, 'Voor het verdwijnt en daarna' (1998) in de Poëziezomer van Watou met curator Jan Hoet en 'E.V.+A' in de Saint Mary Church te Limerick (Ierland). Zijn werk was onder meer te zien in toonaangevende musea als het S.M.A.K. (Gent), het MuHKA (Antwerpen), het PMMK (Oostende), IKOB (Eupen), het Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), het GEM (Den Haag), grootschalige tentoonstellingen als Beaufort (Oostende) en de Lustwarande (Tilburg) en in galeries als Galerie Artist in Istanbul en Berlijn, Galerie Van de Weghe (Antwerpen) en plaatsen als het Ministerie van Financiën (Den Haag), de Academia Belgica (Rome) en het Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington DC). |
