Gretchen Faust Mudra 14th January 3rd March 2010 Gretchen Fausts third solo show at greengrassi consists of portraits of handguns. Photographed in pairs, the guns infer by absence and define by position the hand gestures referred to in the shows title. A Mudra is a symbolic gesture performed with the fingers and hands to focus the mind and direct intention in the spiritual practice of Eastern religions. The show is a natural extension of the work Faust has shown in previous solo exhibitions at greengrassi including the cut paper pieces. Faust frequently uses a reflective central axis a root or spine - to ground the form and meaning of her work in terms of its relational symmetry. Her work is characterized by an austere aesthetic with inference and absence employed as formal devices. The emphasis is on form, scale and function balanced by a personal integrity and intellectual exactitude. Gretchen Faust lives and works in Totnes, Devon. Previous exhibitions include Reflections curated by Jan Boelen & Hilde Vanleuven at Stadhisplein, Belgium; Outside the Frame: Performance and the Object at Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art; Tattoo Collection at Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York (touring to Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Cologne and Air de Paris & Urbi et Orbi, Paris); and solo shows with greengrassi, London and Pat Hearn Gallery, New York. |
