PARTICIPATION – PART 2

Dedicated to supporting practice of national and international significance since 1992, VIVID plays an integral role in the development of regionally based artists. Our history of supporting artist film and video making has expanded in recent years to include research and development models which act as hubs of activity where a multiplicity of art practices may collide. 
 
VIVID grew out of the Birmingham workshop scene of the 70’s and 80’s – a time of creative ferment and challenges to the mainstream. Following on from the first part of the Participation programme, a second strand has been developed to initiate new and nurture existing networks, reflecting VIVID’s own history and the origins of the Birmingham Arts Lab and the Film and Video workshops movement.

For Participation – Part 2 we would like to provide open access for a range of practitioners to use our space and facilities as a platform for social interaction, discussion and critique. We are proposing a loose structure, within which the activity and outcomes are completely governed by its users in the creation of an evolving space for production and dialogue.

This self-directed project is politically positioned to challenge the hierarchies associated with gallery based programmes, instead reflecting the shared concerns and outcomes of a growing group of practitioners in the West Midlands.

We are looking for 3 individuals to shape this programme. As a media arts organisation with a special interest in artists film and video VIVID will favour applications from practices relating to this area. We are particularly interested in providing a space for new collaborations and emerging networks.

The outcomes of this programme will be evaluated with the intention of providing ‘space and time’ for an annual ‘salon’ with similar concerns.

PROJECT INTERN - 'The Act of Drawing'
June - October 2009

VIVID is seeking an intern to assist the programme team with the research and development of 'The Act of Drawing'.
 
The Act of Drawing explores the physical act of drawing and it's representation on screen in various forms. This includes the act of mark making directly onto celluloid, the performative act to camera, and the documentary role of moving image in providing a visual commentary to a drawn event. The Act of Drawing also aims to demonstrate different artistic approaches in visualising the varying personal, political and social boundaries that define contemporary life.

The internship will provide essential professional development for emergent curators and arts professionals in the form of research, administration and networking. Applicants must possess excellent administration, research and coordination skills, and demonstrate good oral and written communication skills. The internship will run 1-2 days per week June to October 2009.

Contents May Vary are hosting Manchester's very first Art Car Boot Sale on Saturday 4th of July - coinciding with the Manchester International Festival.

They are looking for 50-70 artists, artist-led groups, projects, galleries and publishers to participate. Selling is not compulsory and proposals should fully outline the exhibition aspect, responding to the physical, social, economical, geographical and/or literal situation.

Participants will be provided with an average car parking space to park and install. Price: £10 per 5.5m x 2.4m pitch for the day.

What is Sculpture in the 21st Century?

The International Sculpture Center is currently accepting panel proposals for it's 22nd International Sculpture Conference which will be held in London, UK, April 7-9, 2010.

This conference will explore and consider the potential of sculpture in the 21st century - to provide an opportunity to both celebrate its vitality and diversity, its capacity to challenge, and to examine its current position, function and production. Individuals are invited to submit proposals for papers and panel discussions that provoke critical exchange and debate in relation to the broad thematic areas referred to below. Submissions are encouraged that support opportunities for interaction between participants and enable the conference to engage in a truly international exchange of ideas and viewpoints.

'The languages of Sculpture':
Since William Tuckers highly regarded book "The Language of Sculpture' was published in 1974, the term 'sculpture' within contemporary art encompasses an increasingly diverse range of practices that resists easy categorization, definition or a dominant set of principles.

While numerous successful practitioners can be seen to be part of a long sculpture tradition, many influential contemporary artists employ varied and eclectic methods and approaches in the production of artworks that engage with spaces, contexts and audiences in which the currency, nature and relevance of the term sculpture remains open to question.

• How and in what way is the development of Sculpture influenced in relation to digital media – light/sound/video and through hybrid and interdisciplinary forms of performance/actions/site based installation?
• To what extent has the curator's agenda shaped the language and reception of sculpture and how has this influenced current developments?

*Public perception and investment: *
The scale of, and investment in ambitious commissions of permanent and temporary sculpture as part of city and regional cultural regeneration over the past two decades has been unprecedented. Matched by an expanding audience for contemporary art, internationally recognised artists have produced innovative artworks that have set new standards and expectations in the field of public art.

• How has the commissioning process and policies for major public projects adapted to this growth, and how has this influenced new ways and methods of working? Are there more appropriate ways to involve and engage artists in development schemes that value and promote sustainability and opportunities for young artists?
• To what extent has the lack of exposure and critique of public sculpture in the art press limited necessary debates in the field, and how well is the impact and investment of projects evaluated in order to gauge it's temporary or long term success?

'The State of Education':
In many UK Universities and colleges sculpture has been incorporated into holistic Fine Art courses that embrace an inclusive approach to cross-disciplinary practice reflecting current tendencies and attitudes. The economics, viability and relevance of maintaining three dimensional making in schools is having an impact on recruitment to Further and Higher Education for subjects such as Sculpture and Ceramics.

• Is the curriculum and support for sculpture changing within the art school and to what extent does this mirror the changes that are taking place in the artist's studio?
• How can sculpture, its production and critical development be maintained and enhanced - can global differences and international exchange provide examples of good practice in education?

The above has been written to prompt and suggest possible platforms for discussion and debate. The ISC welcomes responses that extend and develop these themes in areas that will engage delegates in sharing different perspectives and provoke speculation about the future direction and development of Sculpture in the twenty first century.

Introduction
Established in 1906, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem is Israel's foremost academy of the arts and one of the top art and design schools in the world. Starting in 1981, Bezalel's photography department began awarding its students with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Since then, the department has seen many of its alumni become leading artists in Israel and throughout the world. Among them: Michal Rovner, Elinor Carucci, Adi Nes, Sharon Yaari, Yigal Shem-Tov, Yossi Berger, David Adika, Rona Yefman, Sharon Bareket and others.

Sources of Inspiration
Art does not exist in an empty vacuum. In Israel, the close interaction between peoples of different ethnicities and religions is not the mythology of ancient history but a daily reality with Jerusalem playing the volatile role of state capital and spiritual center of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. The complexities that are manifested in the cultures, politics, and religions of the area allow for equally complex documentary work, addressing the core issues of this field of photography.

Photography Workshops
The summer program is comprised of photography workshops and guest lectures by leading experts who will provide an insight on the social, political, architectural and anthropological aspects of the area. Guest lectures will assist students in assessing the theoretical framework of their projects.

Workshop participants will select subject matter of their own choosing and produce a project at the end of the four week period. Class instruction will span two days per week and students are encouraged to utilize their time outside the workshop to photograph in the Jerusalem area or in any other part of the country. Students will have full access to Bezalel's advanced digital laboratory, scanners, printers, computers, darkrooms, and development tools. The laboratory will be staffed by an assistant.

All lectures will be delivered in English.

Academic Oversight:
Miki Kratsman- head of the photography department at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem. Mr. Kratsman is one of Israel's preeminent photojournalists. His work has been featured in local and international galleries and museums.

Into the Field: Jerusalem

The sites as well as the historic and anthropological forces that have played a dominant role in the shaping of Jerusalem, and indeed in the shaping of world affairs, will be at the focus of this research based workshop. Participants will gain firsthand knowledge of anthropological, historical, and political sites in and around Jerusalem through exploratory visits and will be expected to define their work in relation to concepts like documentation, narrative, fiction, aestheticism and activism. The goal of this course is to supply the participant with primary experience as relating to significant sites and in the process to materialize the relationship between art, photography, and the, often, abstract sources of inspiration.

The Dual Face of Photography

The State of Israel and the larger context in which it exists presents the photographer with endless opportunity for photographic projects. As a complex society grappling with issues of existence and accommodation of a multitude of ethnic and religious groups, Israel provides opportunity for research, critique, and discussion. The projects that will be produced by participants during this workshop will allow for the close examination and scrutiny of personal and public perceptions.

Acceptance to the summer program will be based upon portfolio review. The following applicants will be considered: professional artists, graduates of accredited photography and art schools, advanced photography and art students who have completed at least two years of schooling.

Fall Season 2009 Exhibitions : Trespass - the guerilla gallery, Boston, MA

What we do:
Our goal is to expose the art of new, exciting and innovative artists working in all mediums to the demographics of people, which might never see them without our unique intervention. Based in Boston, we put on exhibitions of varying length depending on the location we choose for each show. Some will last a month while others will only run for the duration of the opening. Even though we originally started out with the intention of putting on these shows illegally, we came to our senses and now rent all locations. 
 
Where we show:
We scout out alternative locations depending on the collection of work we compile for an individual show. We choose them in order to compliment, emphasize or contradict the collection as we see fit, always with the intentions of the artist in mind. Abandoned buildings, retired subway stations, warehouses, industrial buildings, private residences, public spaces both inside and out, burned out store fronts, college campuses, downtown offices and even other galleries that allow us to commandeer their spaces for short engagements. The first question most people ask is how we get people to come to these peculiar venues. Well its simple, we tell them about it. As curiosity has grown so has our mailing list.

What we are looking for:
We are seeking undiscovered, untapped and uninhibited creators with truly unique artistic vision. You are the reason we do this. If you're a well-known artist, congratulations, but we want the next ones, not the last ones.We discourage works that have electrical components unless they are battery powered as many exhibitions are powered by generator. Apart from very rare instances we will consider almost all mediums as long as the work is exceptionally intentioned and executed. 

We are now accepting applications for our fall season starting November 2009.

Application Details (Eligibility & Media):
Open to all contemporary artists, both domestic and international. Any media and genre are acceptable. Eligible Media includes, but is not limited to, drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, digital art, ceramics, fiber art, wood sculpture, metal sculpture and mixed media. All works submitted must be original in design and concept. Artwork must not be copied, in part or wholly, from any published or copyrighted work. Work needs to have been created within the last two years.

Acceptance:
All work accepted for exhibitions must arrive suitably framed, wired and ready for hanging. Sculpture must be clean and have display instructions.
Installations pieces must be hung on location by the artist and with curatorial oversight. Works not gallery-ready, or not exhibiting good craftsmanship, may be omitted from exhibitions. All work must arrive at the given address of exhibition by given deadlines. Accepted work may be refused if it does not conform to the images presented for consideration, at the curators discretion. No substitutions of accepted works will be allowed. All accepted work must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.
Artists will be responsible for deliver and return shipping of all their artwork. All work must be picked up, or mailing arrangements made for return of work.

Sale of Work:
All work must be available for sale during exhibitions (reasonable pricing encouraged). Trespass gallery will retain a commission of 35% on all artwork sold during exhibitions.

Application Fee:
$15(US) for up to 10 submitted images for consideration. $2(US) for each additional work submitted for consideration. Maximum number of submissions per application: 30. Checks, POSTAL Money Orders, or for artists outside the U.S., send an International POSTAL Money Order or a Cashier's Check in U.S.dollars drawn on a U.S. Bank, payable to: Trespass Gallery.

Submitting:
In an effort to conserve resources Trespass Gallery accepts only digital images for consideration. (see details below). The Gallery will retain the submitted images of accepted artwork and reserves the right to use the images in publications and gallery publicity (artists will be credited).
CD's of works not selected will only be returned if accompanied by a SASE.

Images:
The images must meet the following specifications: File names = artist's last name followed by title of work, dimensions and medium (i.e.
LastNameTitle10x10x10Media.jpg). The image files should be in HIGH QUALITY JPEG format or better, images should be no smaller than 1000 pixels in any direction and 72dpi. Images must be oriented properly (i.e. top of image is top of artwork). PLEASE follow these specifications carefully.

We are pleased to announce that the second annual Festival Detours, a Super 8 film festival in Santorini, Greece, will be occurring this summer July 10th-12th.  For these three nights, once again the white walls of Oia village will be adorned with several Super 8 projections for travelers and locals alike.
 
But first, collaboration is both the necessity and the beauty of this project.

We are hoping to provide a true international array of contemporary Super 8 film work. We are accepting all genres of film including animation, documentary, fiction, and experimental film. Funded by the Stanley Picker Trust, the Stanley Picker Fellowship Programme occupies a strategically important role within the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture at Kingston University. Supported by the Trust since 1987, the scheme now provides two high-profile practitioners, one in the field of Fine Art the other in Design, with the opportunity to develop a substantial body of work within a supportive and creative environment.

A public exhibition of work by the Fellows, premiered at the Stanley Picker Gallery, forms a core objective of each Fellowship. Studio space within the Stanley Picker Gallery, technical support, workshop and additional facilities and expertise within the Faculty are made available to the Fellows to develop their chosen project.

A collection of works on paper by Stanley Picker Fellows was launched in 2007 to mark 30yrs of the Stanley Picker Trust and a decade of the Gallery. The individual works are illustrated here as part of an archive dedicated to those Fellows who generously agreed to donate work to the new collection.

Following the appointments of El Ultimo Grito and Mark Beasley (2004), Shelley Fox and Elizabeth Price (2005), PublicWorks and Deborah Smith (2006), Sara Fanelli and Juneau Projects (2007) and Julia Lohmann and David Austen (2008), the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture at Kingston University is seeking two high-profile practitioners, one in the field of Fine Art the other in Design, for the Stanley Picker Fellowships 2009. Each Fellowship provides up to £11,000 towards developing, from within the Faculty, an innovative exhibition project of international standing that will form a core part of the future programme at the Stanley Picker Gallery.
