Arles Photography Open Salon Calling for 2012 Submissions
Open Call for an exceptional opportunity for photographers to exhibit in Arles and have exposure for almost 3 months, during and alongside the renowned Les Rencontres d’Arles festival, in the magnificent settings of Galerie Huit.
Audience and Exposure
Arles is the highlight of the international photography calendar, this year running from 2 Jul to 23 Sep 2012. In 2011 festival attendees were estimated at 84,000, including prominent collectors, curators, gallerists, artists, publishers and photographers from around the world. As part of the same entry the selected artists from the 2012 Photography Open Salon will also be showcased in South East Asia in early 2013.
Last year Arles Photography Open Salon showcased 112 Artists from 32 countries on two continents in Galerie Huit Arles, and earlier this year in Penang, Malaysia in China House and Alliance Francaise de Penang.

Arles Photography Open Salon at Galerie Huit www.photographyopensalon.com is an International Photography Open Call designed to showcase cutting-edge contemporary and emerging photography from around the world, promote new work by talented artists enabling them to exhibit and give them exposure during and alongside the renowned international photography festival Les Rencontres d’Arles in 2012, as well as in South-East Asia in 2013.

Theme
An Eye for an Ear
This year we are looking to showcase critically and aesthetically challenging innovative work on the theme An Eye for an Ear. We welcome any responses and interpretations on this theme. Some guidance and possible interpretations of the theme on www.photographyopensalon.com
We welcome interpretations on the theme on any number of levels. As a guide there can be a number of possible interpretations and references:
It is often said that ‘a picture speaks a thousand words’. So the interpretations here can be taken in its broadest sense, strong images that ‘speak’ for themselves; Communication, communicating, or lack of; What is heard but may not be seen, and vice versa, what is seen but may not be heard; Changes in our perceptions and how we view the world as a result of the development of new technologies; Can pictorial expression be universal enough and narrow the gaps and the of lack of verbal understanding between cultural landscapes; Exploring the relationship between looking and seeing, listening and hearing and sign and meaning; Exploring a semantic relationship between image and word, visualising and verbalizing; The sensory world of perception and gestalt, looking at the whole being greater than the sum of all parts when it comes to how we perceive things.
Genres and inspiration relating to the theme can be wide-ranging and relate to any aspect of our lives – personal, historical, environmental, cultural, global, political, social, geographical or seasonal. The theme encourages an exploration of any number of observations, concepts, emotions, experiences and beliefs. We also welcome any other responses and interpretations you may have on this theme.

Prizes and Awards
Awards will be granted in recognition of the photographer’s contribution to the art of photography in the areas of creativity, conceptual strength and technical skill.
• Winning images will be showcased and offered for sale for almost 3 months in Galerie Huit Arles from 2 Jul until 23 Sep 2012 during and alongside the renowned international photography festival ‘Les Rencontres d’Arles’ in France
• In addition a selection of works will be exhibited and offered for sale in early 2013 in Photography Open Salon South-East Asia.
• The winning selection of images selected for the exhibition will be printed by Photography Open Salon, at the size determined by Photography Open Salon, due to the constraints of the Galerie Huit unusual walls and varied installation spaces. Artists also have the option to send their own prints as long as they are the specified size.
• The exhibited images will be offered for sale. The photographers will receive 50% of the sale proceeds if their work is sold.
• The Artists selected to exhibit will be featured on our website www.photographyopensalon.com
• The exhibited Artists will also feature in the book catalogue ‘An Eye for and Ear’ Arles Photography Open Salon 2012
• Main Prize for the overall winner: One month Artist Residency with Galerie Huit in Arles
Judging Panel 2012
Stuart Franklin, Magnum Photographer (UK) a worldwide known award winning photographer, a Magnum photographer since 1985 and president of Magnum Photos 2006 - 2009.
Neil Libbert, Photographer (UK) a London based photographer whose career spans from the early sixties. In 1999 Neil was awarded at the World Press Photo for Spot News stories. Several of his works are held in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, including portraits of Harold Pinter and Francis Bacon.
Richard Hsu, Creative Director, h+5, Curator Shanghai TEDx (China) worked as an assistant to Richard Avedon in the late seventies. Returned to China in 2003 to head up the launch of Wieden+Kennedy in China, also principal of his own creative consultancy h+5, and co-founder of Shanghai streetwear brand, Eno. Currently teaching at Tongji University in Shanghai and Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. He is also the curator of Shanghai TEDx.
Tim Cole, Creative Director, Kino Design (UK) formerly Creative Director and Head of Photography at Saatchi and Saatchi Design, has been working in the design industry and commissioning photography for over sixteen years.
Julia de Bierre Galerie Huit owner, Writer, Heritage Conservationist and Curator (France, UK, Malaysia) an Anglo-French, Malaysian-born writer, heritage conservationist, curator and art-gallery owner. She curated the Chateau de Lucens, one of Switzerland’s most prestigious Historic Monuments, for over a decade. She has worked with major European art collectors and auctioneers.
Vanja Karas, Photography Open Salon Founder, Artist, Curator and Creative Director (UK, Serbia) a Belgrade-born, London-based Artist, Curator and Art Director. Vanja is the Founder and the Curator of the Arles Photography Open Salon at Galerie Huit. She curated the 2011 exhibition Trasience in Galerie Huit Arles and in China House and Alliance Francaise de Penang in Malaysa. She is also the Founder and Creative Director of an award winning branding and design agency Magenta Grove London.
Submission requirements, Format and Size for Submissions
Open to all, the applicants can be at any stage of their career.
Each entry must be a JPG image not more than 1024 pixels on the longest side and not more than 1MB in size. Images must be saved as familyname_name_imagenumber i.e smith_john_o1.jpg.
The short listed artists will then be asked to submit high resolution images which will be printed by the Photography Open Salon at a size determined by the Photography Open Salon. Artists retain copyright for all their work.
