Hivos and the Arts and Culture Program of the Open Society Foundations invite project proposals for the Central Asia Pavilion to be realized within the framework of the 55th International Art Exhibition—Venice Biennale 2013. Building upon the challenging exhibitions during the past three editions of the Venice Biennale, and in recognition of the complex transition period and dynamic developments of the field of contemporary art in the countries of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan), we offer a platform through which the energy of socially engaged contemporary artistic practices from the region can be presented and further developed within the international context of the next Venice Biennale.

We envision the Central Asia Pavilion as a critical and polemical undertaking that explores and strengthens the vibrant potential of contemporary art, society, theory and activism from Central Asia, and makes a significant contribution to the artistic, cultural, intellectual, social and civic imaginaries of the contemporary world. The aim of the pavilion is to stimulate and facilitate regional developments—both in terms of the individual practice of cultural practitioners and in exploring the possible role of art in the changing society—as well as to create a possibility to link these developments to the global contemporary art context.

Preference would be given to the proposals which, besides the Central Asia Pavilion in Venice, include a sustainable discursive project (or a series of projects) in the region of Central Asia before and after its materialization in the framework of the Venice Biennale, and which depart from and further explore the identity of the pavilion as a regional rather than a national pavilion—challenging the constraints of the national representations in the Venice Biennale—proposing an example of collectivity and solidarity for both art and politics instead. The project of the pavilion will be approached critically to ensure a balance between artistic visions and the need for political and/or social representation.

Project proposals must include:

Curatorial vision for the project: concept, project/activities description, and plan for the implementation;
Vision of the additional/collateral events and activities in the region that accompany the project in Venice;
Outline of the organizational and logistic framework; including the implementing local organization;
Timetable for project development and realization; Budget outline (including the reasoning) and financial plan (including a draft of additional fundraising strategy);

Curriculum vitae and/or profile of the individuals involved and/or of the collective or art institution submitting the proposal.

"temporary home 2012 - home in crisis" Kassel, Germany

´temporary home´ is a interdisciplinary arts and culture initiative which actively explores concepts of 'home' in its broader sense. The 2012 edition home in crisis asks how situations of crisis affect the notions, needs and desires of home. The project runs for six weeks from July 1st – August 24th, 2012, parallel to the upcoming documenta13 in Kassel, Germany. During this time, ´temporary home´ literally manifests as a real home for a group of international creatives who will live and work together in a joint investigation, the lived-in installation. The project starts July 1st with a two-week 'construction of home' phase, followed by one month of occupancy (starting July 13th) featuring an ongoing cultural program with art exhibition, performances, music, theatre display, movie nights, discussions, and the creation of space for social interaction and experimentation. All events will be non-for-profit and open to the public.

We invite creative individuals or groups to become part of the lived-in installation temporary home and to develop and present their own concepts about ´home in crisis´ in Kassel, 2012.

Applicants for a residency in the context of temporary home should be prepared to join a creative social setting rather then present in a conventional art show.

Candidates should be willing to physically reside within the project for a period of one or two weeks and to actively share a social home with other residents, attendees, and visitors.

Curatorial Project - Cue Arts Foundation, NYC

This new program provides one deserving curator with the necessary time and resources to realize an innovative project, with the aim of encouraging curatorial research in tandem with exhibition planning. CUE will provide institutional guidance to the curator, who will produce a group exhibition in CUE's space with related public programming and an accompanying exhibition catalogue in June 2013.

The selected applicant will receive a $1000 honorarium and a maximum exhibition/production budget of $2500. CUE will contribute up to $1500 toward shipping expenses and up to $4000 for catalogue production.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
- group show proposals that are conceptually rigorous and focus on artists, projects, and themes that are innovative, challenging, and engaging
- a clearly demonstrated, unique, and creative approach to both curatorial research methods and the exhibition plan
- ideas that are not well represented in the commercial sector.

THE FINE PRINT:
- proposals must include four or more artists, half of whom must qualify as under-recognized
- curators may not include their own work in the exhibition
- extra consideration will be given to those who are in the beginning stages of their curatorial careers

Call for artist proposals: Monument to Cold War Victory

The Committee for Tacit History is issuing a call for proposals for a Monument to Cold War Victory, an open-call competition for a public monument commemorating the outcome of the Cold War. Artists from around the world are encouraged to submit proposals by November 1, 2012.

Monument to Cold War Victory is a conceptual project by the artist Yevgeniy Fiks, taking the form of an open-call, international competition for a public, commemorative work of art.

For over two decades, public signifiers of the Cold War, such as the Berlin Wall, have been framed in terms of destruction and kitsch. A monument created at the moment of its own destruction, the Wall encapsulates the continuing geopolitical imagination of the conflict as linear, continuous, binary, and terminal: the culmination of a now-historicized narrative of competing empires. But while the impact of half a century of sustained ideological conflict still reverberates through all forms of public and private experience—from Middle Eastern geographies of containment to the narrative structures of Hollywood—it has yet to be acknowledged through a public and monumental work of art. The Cold War, the longest and most influential conflict of the twentieth century, has no publicly commissioned commemoration in the United States.

This project examines the enduring genre of war monuments, memorials, and institutionally framed and commissioned artworks. How might the legacy of the Cold War, in all its complex material, social, and cultural forms, be visually articulated? In what ways might the notion of “victory,” implicit in all retroactive commemorations of conflict, be interpreted? Can the traditional, formal structure of the monument, and the historical revisionism endemic to that form, be redefined?

Artists are invited to participate in this project by submitting a proposal for a public monument commemorating the outcome of the Cold War by November 1, 2012.

Submissions should include: a one-page narrative text on your proposed work and its relationship to the legacy of the Cold War, the notion of “victory,” and its reevaluation (if any) of the monument form; a visual schema in the form of three images; and an artist CV. A select number of finalists will be awarded a stipend and the opportunity to further develop their proposal for an institutional exhibition. The submitter of the winning proposal will be awarded a cash prize, and their concept will be implemented and installed in a publicly accessible location, to be determined, in the United States.

Monument to Cold War Victory will be juried by a distinguished panel of cultural and intellectual figures, including Vito Acconci, Susan Buck-Morss, Boris Groys, Vitaly Komar, Viktor Misiano, and Nato Thompson.

To celebrate the publication of Design Like You Give a Damn 2, by Architecture for Humanity founder Cameron Sinclair, we are inviting architects, designers, artists, students and other creative individuals to come up with a proposal for a small scale project, product or build that embodies the spirit of humanitarian design.

Architecture for Humanity London and Studio 54 Architecture are co-hosting a week long event on the theme of designing ‘like you give a damn’. We’re calling for ideas that will in some way improve the London experience.

It could be an idea for a public space installation, a community enterprise, an eco building, an ingenious object, or anything that demonstrates how design can be used to make Londoner’s lives better and happier.

So ideas on a postcard, please. All entries will be exhibited. Visitors can vote on their favourite. We will choose a few ideas to take to the next step.

The proposal can be text, a sketch or other visual representation. Think of an idea that could benefit London. Be bold. Be adventurous. Think big. Or small.

RBS Bursary Awards 2012

The RBS awards ten bursaries each year for sculptors of outstanding talent and potential. We welcome applications from artists of any age and nationality, with or without formal training, who are in the early years of their professional practice. The 10 winners will participate in an exhibition at the RBS Gallery from 14 November - 14 December 2012. An exhibition contract will be issued with the install and de-install dates, private view and talk dates. Winners will also be included in the Award catalogue. Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary 2012, UK

The annual bursary, set up in memory of sculptor Adam Reynolds to support disabled artists working in visual art, is now open for submissions. The bursary, one of the most significant commissioning opportunities for disabled artists in the UK, offers an opportunity to engage in a three month residency at Camden Arts Centre, London.

Background
This bursary is in memory of the life and work of Adam Reynolds and is to support a mid-career artist or artists working in contemporary fine arts.

Now in its fifth year, the bursary is offered in conjunction with a residency in a visual arts venue. This year the bursary returns to the Camden Arts Centre, London. In previous years the bursary has been hosted by the Baltic (Gateshead), the Bluecoat (Liverpool) and Spike Island (Bristol).

The aim of the bursary is to provide an opportunity for artists to develop their ideas and practice without pressure to deliver a particular outcome such as finished or exhibition ready work. The bursary offers space, time and financial support within a framework of constructive and creative critical dialogue. 

The bursary is open to mid-career artists who are disabled or deaf and work in the field of contemporary fine arts, for example: photography, painting, drawing, print-making, installation, sculpture, film, video, digital, performance, sound or live art. Applications are welcomed both from artists who work within a disability or deaf arts context, and from those whose practice is unrelated to the experience of being a disabled or deaf person.

The successful artist or artists will be selected from an open submission, based on the strength of their work and proposal, as well as their suggestions for public engagement as part of the host gallery’s programme. 

About Adam Reynolds
Adam Reynolds (1959 - 2005) was a curator, artists’ advocate, advisor, trainer, mentor and speaker, but first and foremost, a successful and influential sculptor. He worked with many different materials including lead, copper, steel and glass and moved from predominantly figurative pieces in the 1980s towards more abstract, geometric and larger work.
Adam was active in the disability arts sector, but always maintained a broad perspective. He served on the Board of Shape as Chair (1990-97). He also served on the Arts Council’s art panel (1989-94) and as a Trustee of Chisenhale Gallery (1991-2000).

Who can apply?
To qualify for the ARMB you should:
Consider yourself to be a disabled or deaf person.
Currently be engaged in a contemporary art practice.
Have produced and exhibited a body of contemporary art work.
Not be in full-time undergraduate or post-graduate education during the bursary period.
Be based in the UK.

Applications can be made by individuals or those who work in collaboration or in groups. However, for collaborative applications, all applicants must meet the eligibility criteria listed above.
What will the bursary cover?
The bursary will be £5,000.

It is intended to provide time, space and support for artists to work in an open-ended way in order to devote time to the research and development of their practice. For example, it could be used to:
Buy or hire equipment
Pay for materials
Pay for assistant artists or technicians in order to realise a particular work
Pay for living expenses to free up time to concentrate on the residency (for example, childcare costs, rent or lost income)
What will the residency include?
Three months residency at Camden Arts Centre in London (6th August to 5th November 2012)

Apply now to win a 30 day free residency at Can Serrat International Art Center, located in the natural park of the Montserrat mountains, just 40 km away from Barcelona!

Each year, Can Serrat International Art Center offers 2 Visual Art Full Stipends which entitle the winners to a 30-day residency including free accomodation in shared room, breakfast and dinner (except Sundays), and shared access to studio space. The residency is open to visual artists in all fields, regardless of nationality or age. The AIR are responsible for all extra personal living expenses such as lunch, art supplies, travel and insurance costs, telephone charges and any other expenses occured during their stay.

Each recipient may choose a 30-day time slot within the same calendar month, dating up to 12 months from the time of original notification (assuming space is available at that time).

All chosen candidates have the opportunity to do an exhibition at the center at the end of their residency and are asked to leave one piece of work as a donation to Can Serrat's permanent collection.
