The Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University is a laboratory for atypical, anti-disciplinary, and inter-institutional research at the intersections of arts, science, technology and culture
The STUDIO has received a $30,000 NEA Art Works grant to support artist residencies that emphasize the creation of work in new media arts and emerging art forms. With this funding, the STUDIO will offer approximately five residencies at our arts-research laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University, an environment enriched by world-class science and engineering departments. The duration of these residencies is in the expected range of 10 to 100 days, with one month as the anticipated average, and expected gross budgets of approximately $6000.
We seek artists whose work represents exciting new modes of artistic production – who innovate through the simultaneous production of new culture and new knowledge. Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents.
Residencies Overview
At the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, each resident artist will receive the following:
Salary, benefits, and special research staff status at Carnegie Mellon University;
Housing, travel, and relocation assistance (as necessary);
Computer equipment, laboratory supplies, and office supplies;
Dedicated workspace and access to fabrication studios, electronics workshops, etc.
Project funds to be used for skilled consultants equipment and technical supplies;
Logistical support for exhibition and presentation;
IT Support (networking, printing, operating system and software assistance);
Administrative support for purchasing, travel, and other logistics.
Each resident artist will be expected to commit to the following:
To be in residence at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry during the residency
To develop, present and document a artwork, or work in progress, during the residency
To work within the STUDIO towards enriching both our local research community, as well as global communities of sharing and exchange in the arts.
