Black Church Print Studio would like to invite International artists actively engaged or informed by contemporary printmaking practice to apply for a four-week residency in Black Church Print Studio, Dublin, to take place in July 2013.

ABOUT THE BLACK CHURCH PRINT STUDIO
Black Church Print Studio is an artistic collective, supporting and promoting the development of contemporary artistic practice through the medium of printmaking. This is done by providing a studio that facilitates printmaking in all its forms and by promoting awareness and appreciation of fine art print in Ireland and abroad.

Established in 1982 as a non-profit organization, Black Church Print Studio is one of the leading fine art print studios in Ireland. The Studio is located in an award winning purpose-built premises at 4 Temple Bar, part of Dublin City Centre’s cultural quarter. The Studio provides professional printmaking facilities and support to seventy full-time members and non-member artists.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
The International Residency Programme is an initiative of the Black Church Print Studio established to facilitate contemporary artistic practice in the Studio and to further the professional development of artists by enabling the creation and production of new work, fostering an exchange of ideas and influences, encouraging the sharing of expertise and inspiring new works of art and creative collaborations.

· Emerging, mid-career and established professional artists are invited to apply.

· Selected participant in this programme will receive accommodation, basic materials, studio equipment & facilities usage and technical and administrative support.

· Artist will have access to etching, lithography, screenprinting and relief presses, and to multi-media and digital equipment.

· Travel and material costs are the responsibility of the participating artist.

· This year’s Residency is scheduled for a single four-week term in July 2013.

· The successful resident will be asked to complete two editions of works completed during his/her residency and donate two prints from each to the Studio, one for the Archive Collection and one for fundraising.

· The Resident artist will be required to give a demonstration and seminar during his/her residency.

SELECTION
All applications will be placed before a selection panel comprising a sub-committee of the Board. The selection panel will give consideration to the proposal, quality of work and CV/experience.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be practicing Printmakers. Irish residents are not eligible.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 5pm Friday, 1 March 2013

“Standing on the hill where so many people were buried in a common grave, standing there in that cold darkness under the stars, I felt tears running down my face. I can’t describe what I felt. I heard the voices of the long-dead ghost dancers crying out to us.”
(Leonard Crow Dog, during the American Indian Movement’s occupation of Wounded Knee, 1973).

In the last decades of the nineteenth century, self proclaimed prophet Wovoka, of the Paiute people, became the figure-head for the Ghost Dance - a religious movement adopted by a significant number of the Native American Nations. Central to this belief was a communal ritualised dance, inducing a trance state, in which it was believed the souls of the dead and living would be reunited and their land returned to them. In the 1970s the Ghost Dance was revived as part of the Red Power Movement, with the activists group AIM (American Indian Movement) at its forefront, fighting for Native American civil rights. The ghost in the Ghost Dance was a revitalising force for a people whose land and loved ones had been taken from them and who were facing cultural genocide.

The Spiritualist movement in nineteenth century U.S.A provided a forum in which women, whose role in society was very much suppressed, could give voice to their opinions in a public arena. Appeals for women’s emancipation and the abolition of slavery could be expressed under the guise a ghost voice, allegedly channelled through the medium.

At the same time in Europe, in the opening sentences of Marx and Engle’s Communist Manifesto, “A Spectre is haunting Europe – the spectre of Communism.” Communism could be said to have been conceptualised as a powerful ghostly presence, waiting to materialise and take shape within the living as a force for revolutionary change.

As a visual arts and creative research project GHost takes on and explores the conceit of guests, hosts and ghosts, both metaphorically and practically, in its activities. Functioning in its capacity as a supporting platform (or host) GHost aims to enable invited guests to visually and conceptually manifest and interrogate the idea of the ghost.

To date the project has had two central strands: a consideration of the relevance of ghosts in contemporary culture, centred around a programme of interdisciplinary seminars – so-called Hostings –previously held in Senate House at the University of London; and a series of exhibitions, screenings and performances designed to make manifest and, by extension, examine the aesthetics of ghosts and haunted spaces.

Free City is a three-day international public art festival that will take place in Flint, Michigan from May 3 to 5, 2013 at an abandoned, former Chevrolet manufacturing site known as Chevy-in-the-Hole. Free City will reconnect residents to the site, and build awareness of its potential as an open space.  

Flint Public Art Project seeks proposals for performances, light sculptures, video projections, DIY machines, homemade inventions, and temporary events to reclaim and transform the Chevy site with a critical mass of striking, strange, and beautiful experiences. 15 artists and performers will receive up to $1,000 to produce their work.

ACAD, an integral part of Canada, Alberta and Calgary's cultural community, offers four year bachelor's programs and is developing our first graduate program. The College is developing an exciting long term vision that reaffirms its educational mission within an arts and cultural context where design and creativity are keys to the cultural prosperity agenda. 

The Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD) welcomes applications for the following position commencing in the fall semester of the 2013-2014 academic year: 

Visiting Artist (VA)/Instructor/Researcher - Ceramics 

This is a nine (9) month appointment over two (2) terms commencing August 20, 2013 to May 31, 2014.  To complement existing instructional resources, this position will instruct four (4) six (6) hour-long studio courses at all levels of the undergraduate BFA in Ceramics program. The successful candidate will receive a stipend of $16,000.00 towards research and studio practice and will be required to report and present on research activities as well as mount an exhibition of their studio practice and research at the college. 

Qualifications: 

The successful candidate will have an MFA or an equivalent degree or combination of education and professional experience in ceramics, previous teaching experience, a professional exhibition record as a ceramist, excellent technical skills and a wide knowledge of all aspects of the discipline, with a particular regard for the international ceramics profession. Applicants with a studio practice and teaching experience in pottery are particularly sought for this academic year. 

The successful candidate will be community-oriented; comfortable interacting with students, faculty, artists, and the public; and demonstrate a balanced approach between research, practice, and pedagogy. The incumbent will be expected to participate in Ceramics program activities and administrative workload.

Sometimes we take movement for granted. The fact that the Earth is rotating at 1000 miles per hour, or hurtling through space around the sun at 67,000 miles per hour goes practically unnoticed by everyone, except perhaps when one stops to appreciate just why the sun rises and sets, or why we experience seasons. Yet everything about our lives, and life on Earth, is inextricably linked to movement of one form or another.

In honor of the phenomenon of transitioning through space, relative location, and action (and reaction), Manifest invites artists, designers, and engineers to submit works to this competitive juried gallery exhibit which incorporate literal movement (kinetic in one form or another), as well as non-moving works that depict or are clearly about physical movement.

Manifest is eager to present and document a broadly compelling exhibition, a collection of works featuring movement as their common theme, and to discover just how artists address movement in works of art or design today.

Eligibility: KINETICA is open to everyone. Professionals as well as students are encouraged to enter. Open to artists, designers, engineers, inventors, etc. The only limitation is that entries must represent original works of art, design, or engineering.

Media: Manifest will consider any work that can reasonably be understood to either 1) incorporate literal movement as part of its form (moving parts, whether mechanical, automated, human-powered, etc.), or 2) depict or in some other way include movement as a subject or theme of otherwise non-moving and non-kinetic art. Sculpture, painting, drawing, assemblage, printmaking, photography, video, etc., are all possibly valid media. There are no media restrictions other than that the submissions must be 'visual art', design, engineering, or a combination of scientific/artistic creations. There are no size restrictions beyond what can fit into Manifest's gallery spaces. A general floor plan is available here.

The Allianz Cultural Foundation Project Grants 2014

In keeping with its main objective, the Allianz Kulturstiftung supports broadly conceived educational and cultural projects, which benefit the European integration process and encourage the development of a European identity. An important target group for the foundation’s work is the new generation of scholars and artists for whom the foundation has developed a series of exchange and encounter-related projects.

The Criteria
The Allianz Cultural Foundation addresses primarily exceptionally gifted young academics and artists in Europe. In particular, we support cooperative projects with involved partners from at least three countries. In addition to the required artistic, academic or respectively educational quality, the project application has to point out, that the participating project partners share the financial and thematic responsibility and cooperate at eye level. Special attention is paid to projects, which enable long-term networks between the involved artists and project partners. Hence the Allianz Cultural Foundation only supports projects but no institutions. The Allianz Cultural Foundation focuses on particular regions within Europe. Aside from the countries of Central and South-eastern Europe the focal point of the next years lies on the Mediterranean area.
The criteria for funding focus on contemporary concepts of every genre and media which prove new ideas in the arts, culture and education. The projects may also be workshops, whereas the active knowledge transfer and the exchange of experiences between the participants are valued just as the result itself. Furthermore, sponsored projects should on the long run appeal to a larger audience than only professionals.

Project applications – the most important at a glance
Applications for projects in 2014 have to be handed in at the Allianz Cultural Foundation on March 31, 2013, at the latest. Please send your applications via email as well as via mail. The application should not include more than five pages. In your budget planning (part of the application), you should clearly indicate what concrete subtotal you apply for, and for what purposes. Furthermore we would kindly like to ask you to fill out the "project sheet" (max. 2 pages) which you can find on top of this page. As a matter of principle, the Allianz Kulturstiftung only co-finances projects, and never assumes full financing.

Versatile new space for contemporary art

DordtYart is a versatile new space for contemporary art that actively searches for alternative connections between artists, the visiting public, the work and the art market. Housed in the Biesboschhal, a converted former shipping yard, resident and commissioned artists create new work in an open-plan work and exhibition space. Artists produce and exhibit side by side. DordtYart’s unique architecture and location, an industrial building surrounded by water, offers particular inspiration. DordtYart encourages the development of artworks that take the specificities of the location into account.

Artists-in-Residence have access to a workshop, technical support and have ample space for experimentation. DordtYart envisions its program as anopportunity for artists to engage in focused creation and specialized research. We aim to invite international artists whose work is of a high artistic quality and we endeavor to provide a professional environment that facilitates deepinvestigation and rich results.

Due to the open layout of the working/exhibition space, visitors to DordtYart are able to directly interact with artists and, with repeated visits, view the development of their projects. Communication between artists and the public is a vital part of the DordtYart ethos.
Artists are resident for a period of three months and at its end will present their work to the public in an evening lecture. The completed work will then be exhibited at DordtYart for an agreed period.

Paid by artist:
There is no financial contribution required for the artist, but a contribution in time (effort) and quality.

Paid by host:
DordtYart provides a residence in which meals and a compensation for daily expenses are included. Travel costs to and from the Netherlands are not included, but may be negotiated in exceptional cases, at the discretion of the hosts. There are possibilities to receive a fee; the amount of this fee depends on the work of art that will be realized. Materials and technical assistance will be provided by DordtYart and the site specific work of art will be removed after the exhibition, therefore the investment in the work of art is strongly limited. If a work of art is transportable, the work of art remains the property of the artist who will transport the work of art after the exhibition, or the work of art is the joint ownership of DordtYart and the artist. Depending on the made agreements on the destination and the ownership of the work of art, compensation is available for investment in the work of art.

Bedford Creative Arts, in partnership with The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum, Bedford is seeking proposals from artists or artists’ groups for a major new commission in 2013, in response to our artistic theme for 2013: OURS – what we have in common and what makes something our own?

The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum is nearing the end of a £5.8m redevelopment project with ‘People, Place, Collections’ the theme and narrative arc that runs through their approach to the new galleries and displays. Proposals should respond to the specific identity of this institution, its collections, the town of Bedford and the people who live, work and visit there.

A a commission fee of £5,000 is available for the chosen artist or artists group, with an additional budget of £5,000 available for materials, resources and the delivery of specific events and activities. There will also be the opportunity to work with us to identify and secure additional funds and resources in order for the commission to reach its full potential.

We expect participative events and activities for local communities and identified target groups to begin in July 2013. These activities should be integral to the commission and lead to sustained collaborative relationships with participants throughout late summer/autumn 2013. This shared artistic process must result in a new high profile artistic outcome to be revealed in December 2013. The Franklin Furnace Fund is supported in 2012-13 by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs; Lambent Foundation Fund of Tides Foundation; and Jerome Foundation.

Each year Franklin Furnace awards grants to emerging artists, allowing them to produce major works in New York. Grants may range between $2,000 and $10,000 depending upon funding received by Franklin Furnace. Artists from all areas of the world are encouraged to apply, however, artists supported by funding from Jerome Foundation must live in the five boroughs of New York. Full-time students are ineligible.

Franklin Furnace has no curator; each year a new panel of artists reviews all proposals. We believe this peer panel system allows all kinds of artists from all over the world an equal shot at presenting their work. Every year the panel changes, as do the definitions of "emerging artist" and "performance art." So if at first you don't succeed, please try again.
