Uncertain States is delighted to announce our first ever Open Call.
UCS co-founders David George, Spencer Rowell and Fiona Yaron-Field has teamed with the curator Mary George to ask you to contribute to the passion of the Uncertain States project and help us find the very best contemporary lens-based art.
The open call will culminate in a four-week exhibition in October at Four Corners Gallery in London’s East End to coincide with Ucs‘s 5th anniversary and the publication of the broadsheet Ucs. Issue 20.
UCS is committed to championing socially and critically engaged contemporary developments in photography through our publications, programme of talks and exhibitions. Open Call 2014 helps us to further this commitment. With the help of our distinguished panel of judges, we look forward to discovering the best of contemporary British Photography.
SELECTORS
Our distinguished panel of selectors includes Sean O’Hagan, Melanie Manchot, Mari Mahr, Pete James, Zelda Cheatle, Richard Sawdon-Smith, Julie Cockburn, Dave Than and Ángel Luis González Fernández.
OFFER
The unique selection process sees each artist being championed by one selector. The unique selection process sees each artist being championed by one selector. Nine artists, selected by nine judges, will be offered a four-week group exhibition at Four Corners Gallery, East London. The artists, accompanied by a statement from their selector offering insight into the selection process, will be featured in UCS broadsheet Issue 20, which will be available nationwide between October 2014 and February 2015. The broadsheet will be distributed to V&A Museum London, Turner Contemporary Margate, Arnolfini Bristol, Impressions Gallery Bradford, Ikon Gallery, Library of Birmingham, Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art Newcastle, Open Eye Gallery Liverpool, Norwich University of the Arts and Tate Reading Rooms.
ELIGIBILITY
The Prize is open to all living British and international artists residing in the U.K. over the age of 18 years old on 17th August 2014.
A third party (e.g. gallery, agent or other representative) may submit work on behalf of the artist. (Please detailed form on our website)
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Artists are required to submit the following:
1. Completed online entry form.
2. Images of up to 5 recent works, in digital format (jpg, max 2 MB file size), and images must be max1000 pixels resolution; up to 1000 x 1000 with print size and media information.
3. An Artist Statement (350 – 500 words).
4. A non-refundable £15 application fee for one image and £25 for up to five images.
KEY DATES
17th August 2014: Deadline for entry.
1st September 2014: Nine selected artists notified.
29th September 2014: Delivery of work to Four Corners Gallery.
2nd October 2014: Private View and Exhibition opens to public.
The work selected for exhibition must be available from 25th September 2014 to 1st November 2014
