Call for applications academic year 2015 - 2016
Deadline: August 24, 2015

The Master of Research in Art and Design is a one-year postgraduate programme with an international and interdisciplinary orientation. A select group of artists and designers with a MA degree is offered the opportunity to further develop their practice under professional guidance, to participate in research seminars and set up artistic projects together.
The programme includes close supervision of the artistic research as well as the elaboration of a theoretical discourse on contemporary art and society. Student supervision takes the form of three complementary training modules: production, documentation, and presentation, following the interdependence of these components in present-day artistic practice.
The core team consists of three people: Wesley Meuris (visual artist), Hilde Van Pelt (art historian) and Pieter Vermeulen (curator). In addition to that, numerous guest lecturers from a range of fields are invited to analyse, situate and interpret the work of the students. Group discussions are organised in each training module to help students sharpen their artistic profile. Assignments and in-depth individual discussions with the supervisors and guest lecturers will help to discover, revise or criticise the notion of research in the students’ own work.
Next to the three training modules – production, documentation and presentation – the programme includes a masterclass that typically consists of an intensive, week-long workshop. For the academic year 2015-2016, the masterclass will take place in Venice (1 – 8 November 2015), in the context of the Venice Biennale. Under the guidance of Petra Van Brabandt and Pieter Vermeulen (St Lucas Antwerp), the participants will focus on the Belgian Pavilion of Brussels-based artist Vincent Meessen. Throughout their research, they will be granted access to the extensive Library of the Biennale, and be put in touch with leading professionals in the field. At the end of the week, the participants will present their research findings in the Arsenale of the Venice Biennale.
We welcome artists and designers seeking to expand the research aspect of their practice. Holders of MA degrees in both visual arts and design or other fields, with an interest in artistic research, can apply with a portfolio, a letter of motivation, and a research proposal.
