The 2016 Summer Salon is our second annual summer open-door exhibition and fundraiser for the gallery. We believe that open submission shows can be useful for artists, as they open the gallery's doors and bring in the work of a much larger section of artists than the gallery can present through its annual curatorial programme. We have tried to make the show fair to the artist by eschewing judging based on digital submissions and looking at the art itself when it is delivered. We have also included a refund policy, so that all artists whose work is not selected have their application fee refunded. Finally, and crucially, we approach the submissions not as self-appointed judges, but as curators, looking at everything as it comes in and working to curate from the available artworks, so that the selection happens naturally and organically and not based on any preconceived themes or notions. We curate collaboratively, with each member of our gallery team taking on different groups of work and sections of the gallery, once we collectively separate the artworks in ways in which we think they respond to each other, or say something about the way art is made or the kind of dialogues we see them as being part of. There is still room within this method for our personal views and understanding as curators and artists and therefore for subjectivity, but it is intended as an objective, sincere and broad approach.
