It is with great pleasure that Jancou, Geneva announces its first exhibition of 2013, "From the Chinese Menu of Choice, Be Warned, The Meal Will Always Be Chinese". Opening on January 31st and continuing through March 9th, this show will feature new works by British artist Alastair MacKinven. It will be on view in conjunction with the artist's exhibition at the Curtat Tunnel in Lausanne, where he will be engaging migrant workers from China to produce art, exploring recent art market trends through ethno-osmosis.
Whether in reflection upon the history of institutional critique, art market practices, or critical discourse, MacKinven's activity has always involved a self-conscious wariness of binary modes of thinking. In a series of work exhibited at Art Basel 2007, he borrowed from the star-rating system often employed in magazine reviews, and painted on each canvas its rank. In an act that seemed to undermine this distanced commentary, he then advised his gallerist to sell the works at prices that reflected their rating. While positioning himself as both critic and accomplice, MacKinven's work also managed to express a discomfort with the limitation of his choices. Here, MacKinven focuses his attention on the many re-births and deaths of painting that have been discussed over the ages. By allowing the surface of his work to rust, he proposes a kind of painting that exists in a limbo-like state. Rejecting the two fates that have traditionally been forced upon the medium, he conflates conventional understandings of old and new in what he calls an "un-dying entropic timeless living corpse". All this is achieved, however, without complacency nor the comfort of certainty. MacKinven remains ever aware of our indebtedness to past modes of thought even in our avoidance of them, presenting a humorous yet honestly conflicted image of today's anxieties.
Born in 1971 in Clatterbridge, UK, Alastair MacKinven currently lives and works in London. Since his studies at Goldsmiths College, he has worked extensively in painting and performance art. Recent solo exhibitions have included a collection of his performances shown at Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on Sea and an investigation into value systems exchanged within the art world in "Nought to Sixty, ET SIC IN INFINITUM AGAIN" at the ICA, London. The artist's work has also been featured in group exhibitions in a variety of cities, from Houston, Texas, to Vestfossen, Norway.

C’est avec grand plaisir que la galerie Jancou, Genève annonce sa première exposition de l’année 2013, From the Chinese Menu of Choice, Be Warned, The Meal Will Always Be Chinese. Inaugurée le 31 janvier, l’exposition sera visible jusqu’au 9 mars et présentera des nouvelles oeuvres de l’artiste britannique Alastair MacKinven. En relation avec celle-ci, une autre exposition de l’artiste sera présentée au Curtat Tunnel à Lausanne. Dans cette exposition MacKinwen explore les tendances récentes du marché de l'art par une osmose ethnique, en faisant produire sur place des oeuvres d'art par des immigrés d'origine chinoise.
Qu'il s'agisse d'une réflexion sur l’histoire de la critique institutionnelle, des pratiques du marché de l’art, ou du discours critique, le travail de MacKinven à toujours impliqué des modes de pensées binaires avec une certaine conscience. Dans une série d’oeuvres exposées à Art Basel en 2007, il s’inspire du système de notation par étoiles souvent utilisés dans des guides et qu'il applique sur ses propres toiles. Dans ce même état d'esprit, il demande à son galeriste de vendre ses oeuvres à des prix reflétant leur notation, tout en se positionnant à la fois comme critique et complice. Le travail de MacKinven réussit également à exprimer un malaise face à la limitation de ses choix. Dans ce travail, MacKinven concentre son attention sur les nombreuses morts et renaissances de la peinture qui ont été abordées au cours des différentes époques. En laissant rouiller la surface de son travail, il présente une peinture rappelant l’état de limbes. Rejetant ce sort cyclique qui a traditionnellement été imposé à la peinture, il confond les visions conventionnelles de l’ancien et du nouveau dans ce qu’il appelle un “cadavre entropique vivant hors du temps” réalisé sans complaisance ni certitude. Tout en restant conscient de notre dette aux anciens modes de pensées que nous cherchons à éviter, Mackinven présente une image humoristique et honnête des angoisses actuelles.

Depuis ses études au Goldsmiths College, il a essentiellement travaillé avec la peinture et la performance. Ses récentes expositions individuelles présentaient un ensemble de ses performances visible à la galerie Focal Point, Southend-on-sea et une exploration des systèmes de valeurs échangé dans le monde de l’art s’intitulant "Nought to Sixty, ET SIC IN INFINITUM AGAIN" à The ICA, Londres. Les oeuvres de l’artiste ont également été présentées dans des expositions de groupes dans plusieurs villes, allant de Houston, Texas à Vestfossen en Norvège.
