The Market Estate Project, London
Deadline: 10th December 2009
The Market Estate Project offers artists and designers free spaces in a soon-to-be demolished 1960's housing estate in north London, and a chance to help transform more than 100 vacant flats, communal spaces and building facades into a creative playground for artists, designers and residents.
Culminating in a one day pre-demolition event in February 2010, The Market Estate Project will invite the public to explore and experience the site and the art works, just before the bulldozers move in.
The call for submissions is now open.
If you are interested in proposing work that engage and address the site's architecture, history, and community please check out the project website for more information.

Due to the very high amounts of interest in the project we postponed the deadline to the 10.12.2009 and we do not offer guided tours around the estate anymore. Anyhow everyone is welcome to visit the site on their own at all times.
What kind of project are we looking for?
Successful applicants will propose projects that imaginatively address the site’s architecture, history and stories. Special attention will be given to projects that involve residents and local communities.
We are looking for projects that are engaging, participatory, and realisable within the context of a live art event.
Examples of projects can include:
• A sound installation in vacant flats
• Photography projects of the estate
• Light installation on the building facades
• Creative writing inspired by the site
• Collaborative painting works in communal spaces
• Creative re-use of materials found on site
• Performances in void spaces
• Urban games around the estate
Who can take part?
We are looking for people with imaginative ideas and the ability to realise them. The Project is open to all creative disciplines: artists, designers, performers, photographers, poets, moviemakers, musicians, creative thinkers, cooks, fire fighters, tax inspectors etc. If you have a great creative idea, and can realise it we would like to hear from you.
When and how will the project be open to the public?
The project leads up to an all day pre-demolition happening, planned for the 3rd weekend of February 2010 (this is subject to changes as we are working alongside the contraction and demolition contractors schedule). The pre-demolition event will invite visitors to explore the site, experience the works and take part in the live performances on site
What do I get
You will receive a space (or spaces) on the estate according to the needs of your project (anything from flats to a whole building façade), permissions to work on site and intervene with the building, publicity, support in project development, a helping hand and a cup of tea when we can. We are aiming to draw a large audience to our pre-demolition event, and expect the project to be very well attended, benefiting participating artists from exposure and chance to enagee the public with new work. Unfortunately we can’t offer funding for individuals participating, but we are happy to help with advise on where and how to secure funding if this is required.
